Parking Brake System: Service and Repair



Park Brake Support Replacement
Caution: Refer to Brake Dust Caution (Brake Dust Caution) .


Removal Procedure

1. Release the park brake.
2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Service and Repair) .
3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair) .
4. Remove the brake caliper and mounting bracket as an assembly. Refer to Rear Disc Brake Pads Replacement (JL9) (Rear Disc Brake Pads Replacement (JL9))Rear Disc Brake Pads Replacement (J55) (Rear Disc Brake Pads Replacement (J55)) .
5. Pull down on the front park brake cable and remove the intermediate cable from the connector.
6. Remove the park brake cable from the brake caliper lever.
7. Remove the park brake cable from the mounting bracket by depressing the locking tabs.
8. Remove the brake rotor. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (JL9) (Service and Repair)Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (J55) (Service and Repair) .
9. Remove the hub and bearing assembly. Refer to Rear Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement (FE1, FE3) (Rear Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement (FE1, FE3))Rear Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement (FE7) (Rear Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement (FE7)) .
10. Remove the park brake shoe. Refer to Parking Brake Shoe Replacement (Service and Repair) .




11. Remove the support bolts.
12. Remove the support.



Installation Procedure


Important: The support bolts threads and the threaded holes of the knuckle must be free of residue and debris prior to reapplication of threadlocker in order to ensure proper adhesion and fastener retention.






1. Install the support.
Prepare the bolts and the threaded holes for assembly:

* Thoroughly clean the residue from the bolt threads by using denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry.
* Thoroughly clean the residue from the threaded holes by using denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry.
* Apply threadlocker GM P/N 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488) or equivalent to two-thirds of the threaded length of the lower caliper bracket bolts. Ensure that there are no gaps in the threadlocker along the length of the filled area of the bolts.
* Allow the threadlocker to cure approximately ten minutes before installation.


Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice (Fastener Notice) .

2. Install the support bolts.

Tighten the support bolts to 111 N.m (82 lb ft).

3. Install the park brake shoe. Refer to Parking Brake Shoe Replacement (Service and Repair) .
4. Adjust the park brake shoe. Refer to Park Brake Adjustment (J55) (Adjustments) .
5. Install the hub and bearing assembly. Refer to Rear Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement (FE1, FE3) (Rear Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement (FE1, FE3))Rear Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement (FE7) (Rear Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement (FE7)) .
6. Install the brake rotor. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (JL9) (Service and Repair)Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (J55) (Service and Repair) .
7. Install the park brake cable to the mounting bracket until the locking tabs snap into place.
8. Install the park brake cable to the brake caliper lever.
9. Pull down on the front park brake cable and connect the intermediate cable from the connector.
10. Install the caliper and mounting bracket as an assembly. Refer to Rear Disc Brake Pads Replacement (JL9) (Rear Disc Brake Pads Replacement (JL9))Rear Disc Brake Pads Replacement (J55) (Rear Disc Brake Pads Replacement (J55)) .
11. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair) .
12. Lower the vehicle.
