Subject:
Circular Patterned Wrinkle in Chrome Wheel Plating Near Mounting Lugs
Models:
2008-2009 Cadillac DTS
with Chrome Clad 18" Aluminum Wheels
Attention:
Service Manager - the condition in this bulletin may be caused by poorly maintained or improper wheel balancing equipment, specifically the rubber gasket on the clamping cup. Please use this bulletin as an opportunity to review the condition of your equipment. If your dealership sublets out tire and wheel work, please provide a copy of this bulletin to your sub-contractor.
A circular wrinkle or blister in one or more wheels chrome plating near the wheel lug holes may be noted following wheel balancing.
The photo above is an example of this concern. The arrow (1) indicates the approximate location of the chrome wrinkle. It takes the shape of a circular pattern.
The above photo is a close-up showing the detail. The chrome (1) is not blistered, but is smoothly raised.
Wheel Balancing Machine Clamping Cup and Maintenance
This wrinkle condition may be the result of attaching the wheel to a high speed balancing machine without the protector sleeve (rubber gasket) in place on the clamping cup. This protective gasket is subject to wear and is replaceable on all available commercial wheel balancing machines.
Notice:
While most of the clamping cups are made of a plastic material, they are not gentle/soft enough for use directly touching the wheel face. Without the rubber protector sleeve (gasket) in place, the wheel must be clamped with greater clamping force to prevent slippage during balancing. Both the additional clamping force and any motion/slippage against the wheel surface may wrinkle, mar, or degrade the wheel finish.
Warning
The protector sleeve MUST be in place on your wheel balancing machine clamping cup when balancing these wheels. Damage as the result of improper maintenance of wheel balancing equipment is not covered by the New Vehicle Warranty.
Important:
Snug the pressure (clamping) cup onto the spindle, but no not overtighten.
