Thump/Hard Metal Contact Noise Heard when Closing Rear Compartment Deck Lid/Trunk Lid (Install Bumpers)

Models:
2008 Cadillac STS

Built Prior to VIN Breakpoint 80116779

with Rear Fascia Bright Chrome Molding Strip

Attention:
Proceed with this bulletin ONLY if the vehicle is equipped with the rear fascia chrome molding strip. This bulletin should not be performed on any vehicles that are not equipped with the chrome molding strip.

Condition

Some customers may comment on a thump or hard metal contact noise heard when closing the rear compartment trunk/deck lid.

Cause

This condition may be caused when the rear compartment deck lid contacts the chrome molding located on the rear bumper fascia. When the deck lid is closed this may cause a noise.

Correction





Make sure all the bumpers are properly oriented with the curved side (1) toward the deck lid hem flange when installing the bumpers to the deck lid.

Install bumpers to the rear compartment deck lid following the procedure below.

Open the rear compartment deck lid.





Remove the left and right side rear compartment deck lid plug (1) located on the underside lip of the deck lid.





Insert a retainer into a bumper and install the bumper retainer assembly (1) into the right outer deck lid plug hole.





Insert a retainer into a bumper and install the bumper retainer assembly (1) into the left outer deck lid plug hole.





Make sure the bumper is properly seated with the curved side toward the hem flange on the deck lid prior to marking the hole (1) on the deck lid.

Set the bumper into position on the inside center area of the deck lid panel and mark the location of the bumper hole (1) with a paint pen.

Center punch the deck lid hole mark.

Install a drill depth guide and drill a hole into the rear compartment deck lid panel using a 10 mm (25/64 in) drill bit.

Prime and refinish the center deck lid hole sheet metal. Refer to Anti-Corrosion Treatment and Repair in SI.

Insert a retainer into a bumper.





It is recommended that GM Super Lube(R) with PTFE, P/N 12371287 (in Canada, P/N 10953437) be applied ONLY to the center drilled hole edges and retainer.

Apply GM Super Lube(R) with PTFE P/N 12371287 (in Canada P/N 10953437) to the drilled hole edges retainer tab (1) and to the retainer ribs (2).

Insert the bumper retainer assembly into the center of the rear compartment lid hole.

Clean off any excessive grease from the deck lid and center bumper.

Verify all the bumper retainers are fully seated in the deck lid.

Close the rear compartment lid.
