Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement



Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement (LY7 - Gas, 6 CYL, 3.6L, SFI, V6, Alum)

Tools Required

J 39400-A Halogen Leak Detector


Removal Procedure

1. Recover the refrigerant. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging (Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging) .
2. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement (Service and Repair) .
3. Remove the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor and Power Steering Pump Belt Tensioner Replacement (Air Conditioning Compressor and Power Steering Pump Belt Tensioner Replacement) .
4. Reposition power steering reservoir aside. Refer to Remote Power Steering Fluid Reservoir Replacement (LY7) (Service and Repair)Remote Power Steering Fluid Reservoir Replacement (LH2) (Service and Repair) .
5. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Service Intervals) .
6. Remove the LH wheel and tire. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair) .
7. Remove the engine splash shield. Refer to Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement (Service and Repair) .




8. Remove the suction line bolt (1) at the compressor.
9. Remove the discharge line bolt (2) at the compressor.
10. Disconnect the A/C lines from the compressor.
11. Disconnect the electrical connector from the compressor.
12. Remove the compressor mounting bolts.
13. Lower the vehicle.




14. Rotate the compressor and remove from the vehicle.
15. Replace the desiccant bag if the following conditions exist. Refer to Air Conditioning Refrigerant Desiccant Replacement (Service and Repair) .

* Color of PAG oil is brown or black
* Presence of foreign substances

16. If you are replacing the compressor, balance the compressor oil. Refer to Compressor Oil Balancing (Service and Repair) .
17. Remove and discard the O-ring seals from the compressor suction and discharge lines. Refer to O-Ring Replacement (Service and Repair) .



Installation Procedure

1. Install the compressor.
2. Raise and support the vehicle.




3. Install the compressor mounting bolts.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice (Fastener Notice) .

4. Tighten the compressor mounting bolts.

Tighten the stud to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).

5. Connect the electrical connector.




6. Install new O-ring seals to the line fittings. Refer to O-Ring Replacement (Service and Repair) .
7. Connect the suction line to the compressor.
8. Install the suction line bolt (1).

Tighten the bolt to 9.8 N.m (87 lb in).

9. Connect the discharge line to the compressor
10. Install the discharge line bolt (2).

Tighten the bolt to 9.8 N.m (87 lb in).

11. Install the engine splash shield. Refer to Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement (Service and Repair) .
12. Install the LH wheel and tire. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair) .
13. Lower the vehicle.
14. Reposition and install the power steering reservoir. Refer to Remote Power Steering Fluid Reservoir Replacement (LY7) (Service and Repair)Remote Power Steering Fluid Reservoir Replacement (LH2) (Service and Repair) .
15. Install the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor and Power Steering Pump Belt Tensioner Replacement (Air Conditioning Compressor and Power Steering Pump Belt Tensioner Replacement) .
16. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement (Service and Repair) .
17. Evacuate and recharge the refrigerant system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging (Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging) .
18. Using J 39400-A , leak test the fitting of the repaired or reinstalled component.
