Front Disc Brake Hardware Replacement (JE5, JL55)
Front Disc Brake Hardware Replacement (JE5, JL55 (AWD))
Removal Procedure
Warning: Refer to Brake Dust Warning (Brake Dust Warning).
1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Service and Repair).
2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair).
Caution: Support the brake caliper with heavy mechanic wire, or equivalent, whenever it is separated from its mount and the hydraulic flexible brake hose is still connected. Failure to support the caliper in this manner will cause the flexible brake hose to bear the weight of the caliper, which may cause damage to the brake hose and in turn may cause a brake fluid leak.
3. Using a backup wrench on the brake caliper guide pin, remove the brake caliper guide pin bolts (1).
4. Remove the brake caliper and support with heavy mechanics wire or equivalent.
5. Remove the inner brake pad (1).
6. Remove the outer brake pad (2).
7. Remove the brake pad springs.
Note: The upper brake caliper guide pin is equipped with a bushing.
8. Remove the upper brake caliper guide pin (1).
9. Remove the upper brake caliper guide pin seal (2).
10. Remove the lower brake caliper guide pin (1).
11. Remove the lower brake caliper guide pin seal (2).
Installation Procedure
1. Inspect the brake caliper guide pins, seals and brake pad springs for damage and/or corrosion. Refer to Front Disc Brake Mounting and Hardware Inspection (Component Tests and General Diagnostics).
2. Apply a thin coat of high temperature silicone brake lubricant to the brake caliper guide pin.
3. Install the lower brake caliper guide pin (1) to the guide pin seal (2).
Ensure the guide pin seal is fully seated in the groove of the brake caliper guide pin.
4. Install the lower guide pin and seal to the brake caliper bracket.
Ensure the guide pin seal is fully seated in the groove of the brake caliper bracket.
5. Apply a thin coat of high temperature silicone brake lubricant to the brake caliper guide pin.
6. Install the upper brake caliper guide pin (1) to the guide pin seal (2).
Ensure the guide pin seal is fully seated in the groove of the brake caliper guide pin.
7. Install the upper guide pin and seal to the brake caliper bracket.
Ensure the guide pin seal is fully seated in the groove of the brake caliper bracket.
8. Install the brake pad springs.
9. Install the inner brake pad (1).
10. Install the outer brake pad (2).
Note: If reusing the brake caliper guide pin bolt, the threads of the brake caliper guide pin bolt and the threads of the guide pin must be free of residue and debris prior to application of threadlocker in order to ensure proper adhesion and fastener retention.
11. If reusing the caliper pin bolts, prepare the bolts and the guide pins for assembly:
* Thoroughly clean the residue from the guide pin bolt threads by using denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry.
* Thoroughly clean the residue from the guide pin threads by using denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry.
12. Apply threadlocker GM P/N 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488), or equivalent to 2/3 of the threaded length of the brake caliper guide pin bolts. Ensure there are no gaps in the threadlocker along the length of the filled area of the bolts.
13. Allow the threadlocker to cure approximately 10 minutes before installation.
14. Install the brake caliper to the caliper bracket.
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).
15. Using a backup wrench on the brake caliper guide pins, install the brake caliper guide pin bolts (1) and tighten to 63 Nm (46 lb ft).
16. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair).
