Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement - Center (without JL7)

Removal Procedure
Caution: With wheels of the vehicle facing straight ahead, secure the steering wheel utilizing steering column anti-rotation pin, steering column lock, or a strap to prevent rotation. Locking of the steering column will prevent damage and a possible malfunction of the SIR system. The steering wheel must be secured in position before disconnecting the following components:
* The steering column
* The intermediate shaft(s)
* The steering gear
After disconnecting these components, do not rotate the steering wheel or move the front tires and wheels. Failure to follow this procedure may cause the SIR coil assembly to become un-centered and cause possible damage to the SIR coil. If you think the SIR coil has became un-centered, refer to your specific SIR coil's centering procedure to re-center SIR Coil.
1. Turn the steering wheel so that the front wheels are pointing straight ahead.
2. Install the J 42640 through the access hole in the lower steering column trim cover in order to lock the steering column.
3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Service and Repair).
4. Remove the upper to center intermediate shaft retaining bolt.
5. Remove the lower intermediate shaft to the power steering gear retaining bolt.
6. Disconnect the lower intermediate shaft from the power steering gear.
Note: Note the relationship of the center intermediate shaft to upper intermediate shaft in order to ensure proper installation.
7. Disconnect the center intermediate shaft from the upper intermediate shaft
8. Remove the center intermediate shaft with the lower intermediate shaft attached.
9. Remove the lower to center intermediate shaft retaining bolt.
Note: Note the relationship of the center intermediate shaft to lower intermediate shaft in order to ensure proper installation.
10. Remove the center intermediate shaft from the lower intermediate shaft.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the lower intermediate shaft to the upper intermediate shaft.
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).
2. Install the lower to center intermediate shaft retaining bolt.
Tighten the bolt to 30 Nm (23 lb ft).
Note: Ensure the orientation of the intermediate shafts as noted during removal.
3. Connect the center intermediate shaft to the upper intermediate shaft.
4. Install the center to upper intermediate shaft retaining bolt.
Tighten the bolt to 30 Nm (23 lb ft).
5. Connect the lower intermediate shaft to the power steering gear.
6. Install the lower intermediate shaft to power steering gear retaining bolt.
Tighten the bolt to 50 Nm (37 lb ft).
7. Lower the vehicle.
8. Remove J 42640 from the steering column lower trim cover access hole.
