52. Engine Flywheel Cleaning and Inspection
Engine Flywheel Cleaning and Inspection
Cleaning Procedure
Important: In order to maintain the proper component balance, contact surface taper and heat transfer, manual transmission flywheels are NOT to be machined.
1. Clean the engine flywheel in solvent.
Warning: Refer to Safety Glasses Warning (Safety Glasses Warning).
2. Dry the engine flywheel with compressed air.
Inspection Procedure
1. Inspect the engine flywheel hub spline for damage (1).
2. Inspect the engine flywheel hub for cracks (2).
3. Inspect the engine flywheel hub to plate rivets for damage or looseness (3).
4. Inspect the engine flywheel plate for cracks (4).
5. Inspect the engine flywheel plate rivets for damage or looseness (5).
6. Inspect the engine flywheel ring gear welds that retain the ring gear to the engine flywheel for cracks (6).
7. Inspect the engine flywheel ring gear teeth for damage (1).
8. Inspect the engine flywheel for stress cracks at rivets (2).
9. Inspect the engine flywheel for stress cracks at the engine flywheel to crankshaft mounting holes (3, 4).
