DTC P0016
Diagnostic Instructions
* Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle (Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle) prior to using this diagnostic procedure.
* Review Strategy Based Diagnosis (Strategy Based Diagnosis) for an overview of the diagnostic approach.

DTC Descriptor
DTC P0016
- Crankshaft Position (CKP) - Intake Camshaft Position (CMP) Correlation
Circuit/System Description
The engine control module (ECM) uses the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor and the intake camshaft position (CMP) sensor information to monitor the correlation between the crankshaft and intake camshaft position.
Conditions for Running the DTC
* DTCs P0335, P0336, P0340, and P0341 are not set.
* The engine speed is less than 1,200 RPM
* DTC P0016 runs continuously when the above conditions are met.
Conditions for Setting the DTC
The ECM detects a camshaft to crankshaft misalignment by monitoring the camshaft position sensor pulses. The ECM detects the cam sensor pulses occur during the incorrect crankshaft position for 4 out of 5 engine cycles while the starter is engaged or 25 out of 35 engine cycles while the engine is operating.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
DTC P0016 is a type B DTC.
Conditions for Clearing the MIL/DTC
DTC P0016 is a type B DTC.
Diagnostic Aids
Inspect the engine for any recent engine mechanical repairs. An incorrectly installed camshaft, crankshaft, or timing chain can cause this DTC to set.

Circuit/System Testing
1. Idle the engine at normal operating temperature. Observe the DTC information with a scan tool. DTC P0016 should not set.
• If a DTC sets, inspect for the following and repair as necessary:
* The correct installation of the camshaft sensor
* The correct installation of the crankshaft sensor
* A timing chain tensioner condition
* An incorrectly installed timing chain
* Excessive play in the timing chain or sprockets
* A timing chain that jumped teeth
2. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data.
Repair Instructions
Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification (Verification Tests) after completing the diagnostic procedure.
