Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement (All Wheel Drive)
Special Tools
J-24319-B - Steering Linkage and Tie Rod Puller
For equivalent regional tools, refer to Special Tools Tools and Equipment.
Removal Procedure
1. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation Service and Repair.
2. Remove the steering linkage outer tie rod nut.
Discard the nut.
3. Disconnect the steering linkage outer tie rod from the steering knuckle using the J-24319-B - Puller.
4. Loosen the steering linkage inner tie rod nut (1).
Note: Note the number of complete turns necessary in order to remove the steering linkage outer tie rod (2).
5. Remove the steering linkage outer tie rod from the steering linkage inner tie rod (3).
6. Remove the steering linkage inner tie rod nut from the steering linkage outer tie rod.
Discard the nut.
Installation Procedure
1. Install a NEW steering linkage inner tie rod nut (1) to the steering linkage outer tie rod (2).
Note: Install the steering linkage outer tie rod the same number of complete turns as noted in the removal.
2. Install the steering linkage outer tie rod to the steering linkage inner tie rod (3).
3. Install the steering linkage outer tie rod to the steering knuckle.
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution Fastener Caution.
4. Install a NEW steering linkage outer tie rod nut and tighten to 35 Nm (26 lb ft).
5. Tighten the steering linkage outer tie rod nut an additional 110 degrees.
6. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation Service and Repair.
7. Measure and adjust the front toe. refer to Wheel Alignment - Steering Wheel Angle and/or Front Toe Adjustment Wheel Alignment - Steering Wheel Angle and/or Front Toe Adjustment.
8. Tighten the steering linkage inner tie rod nut to 65 Nm (48 lb ft).
