Parking Brake System: Service and Repair
Park Brake Hardware Replacement
Removal Procedure
Warning: Refer to Brake Dust Warning Brake Dust Warning.
1. Disable the parking brake cable adjuster. Refer to Parking Brake Cable Adjuster Disabling Parking Brake Cable Adjuster Disabling.
2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle Service and Repair.
3. Remove the rear tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation Service and Repair.
4. Remove the rear disc brake rotor. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (J64) Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (J64)Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (J55) Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (J55).
5. Compress the park brake shoe hold down springs (1) and rotate the pins 1/4 turn to remove the hold down springs.
6. Remove the hold down spring pins.
7. Remove the park brake shoe upper return spring (1).
8. Remove the park brake shoe adjuster (1).
9. Remove the park brake shoe lower return spring (1).
10. Inspect the park brake hardware for damage or excessive corrosion and replace, if necessary.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the park brake shoe lower return spring (1).
2. Spread the top of the park brake shoes slightly and install the park brake shoe adjuster (1).
3. Install the hold down spring pins.
4. Compress the park brake shoe hold down springs (1) and rotate the pins 1/4 turn to install the hold down springs.
5. Install the park brake shoe upper return spring (1).
6. Adjust the parking brake. Refer to Parking Brake Adjustment Adjustments.
7. Install the rear brake rotor. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (J64) Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (J64)Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (J55) Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (J55).
8. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation Service and Repair.
9. Enable the parking brake cable adjuster. Refer to Parking Brake Cable Adjuster Enabling Parking Brake Cable Adjuster Enabling.
