Campaign - Radio Volume Increases To Maximum Won't Turn Down

SERVICE UPDATE

Bulletin No.: 12141

Date: June 29, 2012

Subject: ---12141 Service Update for Inventory and Customer Vehicles Radio Volume Increases to Maximum and Cannot Be Turned Off Expires with Base Warranty

Models:
2013 Cadillac XTS

This service update includes vehicles in dealer inventory and customer vehicles that return to the dealership for any reason. This bulletin will expire at the end of the involved vehicle's New Vehicle Limited Warranty period.

Purpose

This bulletin provides a service procedure to rewire the Integrated Center Stack (ICS) on certain 2013 model year Cadillac XTS vehicles. On these vehicles, a ground circuit ring terminal for the ICS may contact the ground chassis intermittently, causing the radio volume to increase to maximum volume. The driver will not be able to turn the radio off. This condition may or may not occur on subsequent ignition cycles.

This service procedure should be completed as soon as possible on involved vehicles currently in dealer inventory and customer vehicles that return to the dealer for any type of service during the New Vehicle Limited Warranty coverage period.

Vehicles Involved

All involved vehicles are identified by VIN in the Global Warranty Management System - Investigate Vehicle History Application. Dealership technicians should always check this site to confirm vehicle involvement prior to beginning any required inspections and/or repairs. It is important to routinely use this tool to verify eligibility because not all similar vehicles may be involved regardless of description or option content.

Additionally, a list of involved vehicles currently in dealer inventory is available on the "Service Update Bulletin Information" link under the "Service" tab in GM GlobalConnect (US) or attached to the GlobalConnect message (Canada) used to release this bulletin. Customer vehicles that return for service, for any reason, and are still covered under the vehicle's base warranty should also be checked for vehicle eligibility.

Parts Information

No parts are required for this update.

Service Procedure

1. With the vehicle running, open the infotainment and center stack (ICS) display bin door.

2. Leave the bin door open, turn off the car.

3. Remove the ICS fuse 5 from the instrument panel fuse block. The instrument panel fuse block is located in the instrument panel on the driver side of the vehicle. Open the fuse panel door to access the fuse. Refer to the owners manual or illustration for fuse location information.

4. Remove and retain the 5 screws on the black cover on the back of the ICS bin door. Remove and retain the cover.

Caution
In order to reduce the possibility of electrostatic discharge damage (ESD) to the ICS display, DO NOT touch the circuit board. In addition, do NOT exit and re-enter the vehicle while performing steps 6-13.
The electronic components that are used in the control systems are often designed to carry very low voltage. These electronic components are susceptible to damage caused by electrostatic discharge. Less than 100 V of static electricity can cause damage to some electronic components. By comparison, it takes as much as 4,000 V for a person to even feel a static discharge.

There are several ways for a person to become statically charged. The most common methods of charging are by friction and by induction. An example of charging by friction is a person sliding across a car seat.

Charging by induction occurs when a person with well insulated shoes stands near a highly charged object and momentarily touches ground. Charges of the same polarity are drained off leaving the person highly charged with the opposite polarity. Static charges can cause damage, therefore, it is important to use care when handling and testing electronic components.

5. Perform Steps 6-13 inside of vehicle. Do NOT exit and re-enter vehicle to reduce the potential for electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage to the ICS display. Do NOT touch the ICS display circuit board.

6. Locate the ground wire inside the bin door. Refer to illustration. Remove the screw that holds the ring terminal. Retain the screw.

7. Reinstall the screw from Step 6 in the same hole without the ring terminal. Torque to tightness but do not strip.

8. Locate the screw just below the screw removed in Step 6 and re-installed in Step 7. Remove the screw and lock washer/flat washer assembly. Retain the assembly.

9. Place the ring terminal under the flat washer of the screw in Step 8. Reinstall this screw in the original hole to fasten the ring terminal. Ensure the wire and terminal is oriented as shown. Torque to tightness but do not strip.

10. Reposition the bin back cover and reinstall using the fasteners from Step 4. Torque to tightness but do not strip.

11. Reinstall ICS fuse 5 into the instrument panel fuse block.

12. Start the car and close the ICS bin door.

13. Turn on the radio and verify that the volume slider functions correctly.

Whenever a vehicle subject to this service update enters your vehicle inventory, or is in your facility for service in the future, and the vehicle is still covered under the New Vehicle Limited Warranty, you must take the steps necessary to be sure the service update correction has been made before selling or releasing the vehicle.
