Rear Axle Assemble

^ Tool Required:
- J 42155 Differential Assembly Lifter
- J 25070 Heat Gun
- J 42164 Pinion Gear Holder





1. Install the left side differential cover and the left side differential cover bolts.
- Tighten the left side differential cover bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).

NOTICE: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

Important:
- If the drive pinion cartridge has not been disassembled, reuse the pinion cartridge shims removed during differential disassembly.
- If the drive pinion cartridge has been disassembled, refer to DRIVE PINION SHIM SELECTION for proper shim sizes. Drive Pinion Shim Sizes

2. Install the drive pinion shim pack in the differential carrier.





3. Heat the differential carrier around the drive pinion cartridge opening using J 25070.





4. Install the drive pinion cartridge in the differential carrier.





5. Install drive pinion cartridge bolts.
- Tighten the drive pinion cartridge bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
6. Check pinion rotating torque using J 42164 and a torque wrench.

Pinion Rotating Torque
The pinion rotating torque should be no greater than 3 Nm (22 inch lbs.).





7. Install the rear differential cover and the rear differential bolts.
- Tighten the rear differential cover bolts to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).





8. Install the differential case assembly in the differential carrier using J 42155.
9. Install the C-clip on the right output shaft.





10. Install the right side transmission stud mount and bolts.
- Tighten the transmission stud mount bolts to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
11. Install the right side transmission mounting stud to the differential carrier.
- Tighten the right side transmission mounting stud to 42 Nm (31 ft. lbs.).





12. Install the right side differential cover and the right side differential cover bolts.
- Tighten the right side differential cover bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).





13. Install the vehicle speed sensor and bolt.
- Tighten the vehicle speed sensor bolt to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).





14. Install the axle lubricant fill tag (1), washer (2) drain plug (3).
- Tighten the axle lubricant drain plug (3) to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).
