SAFETYBulletin No.: 11313
Date: October 15, 2012
Subject: 11313 Special Coverage Adjustment - Loss of Daytime Running Light (DRL) Function
Models:
2004-2007 Chevrolet Aveo
2004-2007 Chevrolet Optra
2004-2006 Chevrolet Epica
2005-2007 Pontiac Wave/G3
(Canada Only)
Condition
General Motors has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2004-2007 model year Chevrolet Aveo, 2004-2007 model year Chevrolet Optra, 2004-2006 model year Chevrolet Epica, and 2005-2007 model year Pontiac Wave/G3 vehicles sold in Canada.
On some vehicles, certain components in the daytime running lamp (DRL) module may fail causing one or more of the following conditions: the DRL headlamps may flicker but remain illuminated; the DRL indicator in the instrument panel may flash; the DRL headlamps may remain illuminated after the vehicle is turned off; the DRL headlamps may cease to function and the DRL indicator in the instrument panel will turn off. Driving without DRL headlamps may render the vehicle less visible to other motorists and pedestrians during daylight hours.
Special Coverage Adjustment
This special coverage covers the condition described above for a period of 10 years or 240,000 km, whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, regardless of ownership.
Dealers are to verify the condition and replace the DRL Module if necessary. The repairs will be made at no charge to the customer.
For vehicles covered by Vehicle Service Contracts, all eligible claims with repair orders on or after October 4, 2012 are covered by this special coverage and must be submitted using the labour operation codes provided with this bulletin. Claims with repair orders prior to October 4, 2012 must be submitted to the Service Contract provider.
Vehicles Involved
All involved vehicles are identified by Vehicle Identification Number on the Applicable Warranties section in GM Global Warranty Management system. Dealership service personnel should always check this site to confirm vehicle involvement prior to beginning any required inspections and/or repairs. It is important to routinely use this tool to verify eligibility because not all similar vehicles may be involved regardless of description or option content.
Parts Information
Parts required to complete this special coverage are to be obtained from General Motors Customer Care and Aftersales (GMCC&A).
Service Procedure
The daytime running lamps and indicator should illuminate under the following conditions:
- The ignition is ON.
- The light switch is OFF.
- The parking brake is released.
Verify that the DRL Module requires replacement. Refer to the appropriate diagnostic information in SI.
- If the DRL Module does NOT require replacement, no further action is required. Inform the customer that any additional diagnosis and repairs are not covered under this special coverage.
- If the DRL Module requires replacement, refer to Daytime Running Lamp Control Module Replacement in SI.
Customer Reimbursement
Customer requests for reimbursement of previously paid repairs to correct the condition described in this bulletin are to be submitted to the dealer prior to or by August 31, 2013. Repairs must have occurred within 10 years of the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, or 240,000 km kilometers, whichever occurs first.
When a customer requests reimbursement, they must provide the following:
- Proof of ownership at time of repair.
- Original paid receipt confirming the amount of unreimbursed repair expense(s) (including Service Contract deductibles), a description of the repair, and the person or entity performing the repair.
All reasonable and customary costs to correct the condition described in this bulletin should be considered for reimbursement. Any questions or concerns should be reviewed with your GM representative prior to processing the request.
Courtesy Transportation
The General Motors Courtesy Transportation program is intended to minimize customer inconvenience when a vehicle requires a repair that is covered by the New Vehicle Limited Warranties. The availability of courtesy transportation to customers whose vehicles are within the warranty coverage period and involved in a product program is very important in maintaining customer satisfaction. Dealers are to ensure that these customers understand that shuttle service or some other form of courtesy transportation is available and will be provided at no charge. Dealers should refer to the General Motors Service Policies and Procedures Manual for Courtesy Transportation guidelines.
Warranty Transaction Information
Submit a transaction using the table below.
* The amount identified in "Net Item" should represent the dollar amount reimbursed to the customer.
Customer Notification
General Motors will notify customers of this special coverage on their vehicles (see copy of typical customer letter included with this bulletin - actual divisional letter may vary slightly).
Daytime Running Lamp Inspection Procedure (11313)
Perform the following in daylight hours and with the vehicle parked outside.
Headlamp "ON" Position
1. With the engine off and the parking brake applied, turn the headlamp switch to the "ON" position. Ensure that your headlamps are in the "low beam" position by pulling the turn signal lever toward you.
2. Standing in front of the vehicle, check the headlamps to ensure that both the left and right bulbs are working.
3. If either bulb is not working, replace it before proceeding to Step 4.
Note
You will need an assistant for Steps 4-9.
4. Enter the vehicle and turn the headlamp switch to the "OFF" position.
5. Place your foot on the brake pedal and release the parking/emergency brake.
6. Start your vehicle, and with your foot still on the brake, shift your vehicle out of "PARK" while monitoring the instrument panel (IP) or the secondary information center (SIC) for the DRL indicator lamp. See your owner manual for the location of the DRL indicator lamp in your vehicle.
Typical DRL Indicators
7. Verify that the DRL indicator lamp in the IP or SIC is illuminated. In addition, have your assistant verify the DRL low beam headlamps are illuminated.
- If the DRL indicator lamp in the IP or SIC is illuminated and the DRL low beam headlamps are illuminated, your DRLs are working normally and no further action is required.
- If the DRL indicator lamp is not illuminated, or is flickering, or if the DRL low beam headlamps are not illuminated, then your DRL lamps are not working correctly and you should make an appointment with your dealer for diagnosis and servicing.
8. Shift the vehicle back to "Park" and turn off the vehicle. The DRL Low beam headlamps should turn off. If they do not, see you dealer for diagnosis and servicing.
Important
Although you may continue to drive your vehicle without functional DRLs, we suggest that you turn your headlamps to the "ON" position while driving until you have had the repairs completed. Diagnosis and repairs for conditions other than those described in this letter are not covered by this program.
