Indicator/Warning Message Description and Operation

CHANGE ENGINE OIL

The instrument panel cluster (IPC) illuminates the CHANGE ENGINE OIL message in the driver information center (DIC) when the engine control module (ECM) determines that the engine oil needs to be changed. The PCM sends a class 2 message to the IPC requesting illumination. After the oil is changed, reset the engine oil monitor. Refer to GM Oil Life System Resetting.

CHECK ENGINE

The instrument panel cluster (IPC) illuminates the malfunction indicator lamp control module (MIL) telltale when the engine control module (ECM) detects a malfunction in the engine emission system. The MIL indicates that an emission related malfunction has occurred and vehicle service is required. The MIL telltale is hardwired to the ECM and the ECM will ground the MIL control circuit when it wants the indicator illuminated in the IPC. Refer to Engine Control Module Description.

CHECK OIL LEVEL

The instrument panel cluster (IPC) illuminates the CHECK OIL LEVEL message in the driver information center (DIC) when the engine control module (ECM) detects low engine oil level, and the signal circuit is high. The ECM only monitors the signal circuit of the engine oil level switch for a brief period when the key moves from ON to START. The IPC receives a class 2 message requesting illumination from the ECM.

Door Ajar Indicator

The driver information center (DIC) illuminates the LEFT DOOR AJAR or RIGHT DOOR AJAR indicator when the body control module (BCM) detects that one of the doors is open. The IPC receives a class 2 message from the BCM indicating the door ajar status. If this message is displayed and the vehicle speed is greater than 4.8 km/h (3 mph), a chime will sound.

The door ajar indicator system function is to alert the vehicle operator when a vehicle door has inadvertently been left ajar or open. Failure of the door ajar indicator system does not affect door locks or any other vehicle system.

ICE POSSIBLE

The driver information center (DIC) illuminates the ICE POSSIBLE message when the outside air temperature drops below 2°C (36°F). When the temperature rises above 5.5°C (42°F) the ICE POSSIBLE message turns off. The IPC receives a class 2 message indicating the outside air temperature from the body control module (BCM).

Km/h and MPH Indicator(s)
km/h
- The instrument panel cluster (IPC) illuminates the km/h indicator when the IPC detects that metric units have been requested. The IPC monitors the signal circuit of the ENG/MET switch. The IPC sends a class 2 message indicating the requested units to the head up display (HUD).

MPH
- The IPC illuminates the mph indicator when the IPC detects that English units have been requested. The IPC monitors the signal circuit of the ENG/MET switch. The IPC sends a class 2 message indicating the requested units to the head up display (HUD).

LOW FUEL

The instrument panel cluster (IPC) illuminates the LOW FUEL message in the driver information center (DIC) when the ECM detects that the fuel level is less than a pre-determined value. The IPC receives a class 2 message from the ECM indicating the fuel level.

LOW OIL PRESSURE

The instrument panel cluster (IPC) illuminates the LOW OIL PRESSURE message in the driver information center (DIC) when the ECM detects low engine oil pressure, and the signal circuit is low. The IPC receives a class 2 message requesting illumination from the ECM.

SERVICE VEHICLE SOON

The driver information center (DIC) illuminates the SERVICE VEHICLE SOON message in the DIC when the IPC detects certain malfunctions like the ABS system failure or the system power mode failure. The IPC illumination from the engine control module (ECM).
