Interior - Replacement of Second Design Headliner

INFORMATION

Bulletin No.: 09-08-110-021

Date: September 25, 2009

Subject: Replacement of Second Design Headliner - Requires Additional Parts Kit(s)

Models:
2007-2009 Chevrolet Impala

Attention:
This bulletin pertains only to standard roof vehicles and not those equipped with a sunroof (RPO CF5). These vehicles may or may not also be equipped with OnStar(R) (RPO UE1).

Standard roof vehicles built prior to August 2008 have only three assist handles. For vehicles built after that date, a fourth assist handle was added at the front left hand side (1). Another design change taking place at this same time was that the OnStar(R) microphone location was moved from the inside rearview (ISRV) mirror to the headliner (2).

When vehicles with three assist handles require a headliner replacement, a new headliner with four assist handle openings will be provided. This headliner will require installation of an assist handle service kit to add the fourth assist handle to the headliner.

Important
- Do NOT request the OnStar(R) service kit, shown above, when the vehicle did not have the option installed previously.
- When installing the new OnStar(R) kit, the old microphone in the ISRV mirror will be disconnected but will remain in the vehicle.

If the vehicle is equipped with OnStar(R), an OnStar(R) service kit will also be required to change the OnStar(R) microphone location from the ISRV mirror to the headliner. The new service headliner will have an opening for the OnStar(R) microphone and also a wiring harness connector (1) to connect to the new microphone.

Important

- For vehicles equipped with roof rail air bags (RPO ASF), use the existing bolts/washers attaching the handle bracket and do NOT replace them with the ones provided in the handle service kit. For vehicles without roof rail air bags, the handle kits include the bolts, washers and J-clips required to attach the handle bracket to the inner roof sheet metal.
- The bracket provided in the handle service kit will include a push pin fastener originally intended to go into a hole in the inner roof sheet metal. However, this hole will not be present on the vehicle, so the fastener should be discarded.

Order the appropriate part kit(s) from the table below and install the fourth assist handle, and if necessary, the OnStar(R) microphone following the procedures in SI.
