Condition

Some customers may comment about an engine oil leak. Upon inspection, the technician may find that the oil leak appears to be coming from above the rear main seal or the oil pan gasket.

Cause

The oil passageway block plug located above the crankshaft at the rear of the engine block may not be tight.

Correction

Diagnose the engine oil leak by thoroughly cleaning the area, adding dye to the system and using a black light to identify the source of the leak. If any of the oil gallery plugs at the back of the engine block are leaking, proceed to the following steps.

1. Remove components as necessary in order to access and remove the leaking oil passageway plug.
2. Inspect the plug for any signs of damage and replace the plug if necessary.
3. If reusing the original plug, apply sealant to the threads before installing. Service replacement plugs come with a pre-applied sealant already on the threads.
4. Install the plug.

Tighten
Tighten the plug to 33 Nm (24 lb ft).
