TECHNICAL

Bulletin No.: 08-08-110=019

Date: December 09, 2008

Subject:
Interior Strong (Skunk-like/Chemical) Odor (Replace and Revise Dash Mat and Brake Booster Boot)

Models:
2007 Chevrolet Impala

Built Between January 1, 2007 and March 1, 2007

Condition

Some customers may comment on a strong (skunk-like or chemical) odor in
the interior of the vehicle.

Cause

Investigation has determined that the odor may be caused by an interaction between the rubber brake booster boot and the instrument panel insulator pad.

Correction

Inspect the vehicle to determine the source of the odor. Inspect the instrument panel insulator material around the brake booster boot. If it is determined that the issue is from the brake booster area, use the following procedure to repair the vehicle:

1. Remove the carpet from the vehicle. Refer to Floor Panel Carpet Replacement in SI. Store the carpet in a dry, well ventilated area for at least 24 hours.

2. Remove the steering column assembly from the vehicle. Refer to Steering Column Replacement in SI.

3. Remove the power brake booster. Refer to Power Vacuum Brake Booster Replacement in SI. Store the brake booster assembly in a dry, well ventilated area for at least 24 hours.

4. Remove the instrument carrier assembly and HVAC Module. Refer to HVAC Module Assembly Replacement in SI.

5. Remove the instrument panel insulator from the vehicle and discard outside of the work area, away from the carpet and brake booster removed earlier.

6. Remove the rubber brake booster boot from the vehicle and discard outside of the work area, away from the carpet and brake booster remover earlier.

7. Revise the opening in the new instrument panel insulator as shown. Ensure that there is at least 25 mm clearance between the insulator and the brake booster boot (1).

8. Install a new brake booster boot.

9. Install the revised instrument panel insulator.

10. Remove the brake booster assembly and carpeting from storage.

1. Inspect the carpet for odor. Pay close attention to the area around the brake booster boot. If the odor is present in the carpet assembly, order a new floor panel carpet assembly. If no odor is present, use the original floor carpet assembly.

2. Inspect the power brake booster assembly for odor. Pay close attention to the foam ring that sits inside of the brake booster boot. If the odor is present, order a new power vacuum brake booster assembly. If there is no odor, use the original brake booster assembly.

11. Install the HVAC module assembly. Refer to HVAC Module Assembly Replacement in SI.

12. Install the brake booster assembly. Refer to Power Vacuum Brake Booster Replacement in SI.

13. Install the steering column assembly. Refer to Steering Column Replacement in SI.

14. Install the carpet assembly. Refer to Floor Panel Carpet Replacement in SI.

Note:
Based on the severity of the original concern, it may be necessary to steam clean the seats and headliner as a precaution.
