Date: June 10, 2009
Subject: Manual Transaxle Stuck In Reverse Gear (Replace Detent Spring/Plug)
Models:
2007-2009 Chevrolet Aveo
2007-2009 Pontiac G3
All Equipped with Manual Transaxle (RPO D16)
Condition
In rare cases, some customers may comment that the vehicle remains in reverse even though the gearshift knob is in neutral. The back-up lamps may be also on.
Cause
This condition may be caused by the reverse gear getting stuck in the reverse position due to the detent spring in the interlock system.
Correction
Note
DO NOT REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION FOR THIS CONCERN.
Add a new detent spring that increases from 14 Nm to 22 Nm following the procedure below.
1. Fully turn the steering wheel to the left.
2. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
3. Remove the engine splash shield.
Note
When removing the detent spring, it may "pop out" suddenly.
4. Using special tool DT-49949, slowly remove the detent spring plug (1).
Hints to Help in Removal of Detent Spring Plug
- Thrust the head of plug into the slot at the special tool.
- Lever up the plug and remove the plug and spring.
- Discard the old spring and the old plug.
5. Install a new detent spring, GM P/N 96987574, and block the hole with a new plug, GM P/N 94580525.
6. Install the new plug using a proper hammer. Hammer lightly several times until hearing a metal sound - which means the plug is contacting the end of housing stopper.
7. Install the engine splash shield.
8. Lower the vehicle.
9. Verify the correct gearshift operation.
