TECHNICAL

Bulletin No.: 09-06-04-020

Date: March 25, 2009

Subject:
Oil Pressure Light Flickers at Idle (Check Oil Pressure/Replace Oil Pressure Sensor)

Models:
2005-2008 Chevrolet Aveo
2006-2008 Pontiac Wave (Canada Only)

All Equipped with 1.6L Engine (VIN 6 - RPO L91)

Condition

Some customers may experience a flickering oil pressure light at hot idle. Upon further investigation, the technician may find that increasing the engine RPM slightly will turn the light off.

Correction

Important
Do not replace the oil pump, rod/main bearing or engine for this concern

1. Verify the customer's concern.

2. Locate the oil pressure sensor (1) on the back side of the engine/passenger side of the vehicle.

3. Install a mechanical gauge in the engine in place of the oil pressure switch. Refer to Oil Pressure Diagnosis and Testing in SI.

4. Start the engine and let idle. Verify that the oil pressure is above 5 psi (30 kPa) at hot idle in gear. If the mechanical gauge reads 5 psi (30 kPa) or greater, install a new sender, GM P/N 55354378.

If the oil pressure is below 5 psi (30 kPa) at hot idle, refer to SI for low oil pressure diagnosis.
