Condition
Some customers may experience a flickering oil pressure light at hot idle. Upon further investigation, the technician may find that increasing the engine RPM slightly will turn the light off.
Correction
Important
DO NOT replace the oil pump, rod/main bearing or engine for this concern.
1. Verify the customer's concern.
2. Locate the oil pressure gage sensor (1) on the back side of the engine/passenger side of the vehicle.
3. Remove the oil pressure gage sensor.
4. Install a mechanical gauge in the engine in place of the oil pressure gage sensor. Refer to Oil Pressure Diagnosis and Testing in SI.
5. Start the engine and let it idle. Verify that the oil pressure is above 5 psi (30 kPa) at hot idle in gear. If the mechanical gauge reads 5 psi (30 kPa) or greater, install a new sensor, GM P/N 96494264.
If the oil pressure is below 5 psi (30 kPa) at hot idle, refer to SI for low oil pressure diagnosis.
Installing New Engine Oil Pressure Gage Sensor
1. Remove the mechanical gauge.
2. Install the new oil pressure switch, P/N 96494264.
3. Clean the engine oil pressure connector. Make sure it is clean of oil and debris.
4. Before installing the connector, place a small amount of dielectric silicone grease, GM P/N 12345579 (in Canada, use P/N 10953481) or equivalent, to the new connector. Connect the new connector into the oil pressure switch.
