* Diagnostic Procedure Instructions provides an overview of each diagnostic category.
Circuit/System Description
The body control module (BCM) supplies battery voltage to all of the courtesy lamps through the courtesy lamp supply voltage circuit. The dome lamp switch has 3 positions: DOOR, OFF, and ON. When in the DOOR position, the dome lamp operation is controlled by the body control module (BCM). The ON position provides a ground for continuous operation. Ground is provided at G302. The OFF position turns OFF any dome lamp operation. The dome lamp also contains two reading lamps that illuminate when their switch is placed in the ON position. The front courtesy/reading lamps illuminate whenever a door is opened or its switch is placed in the ON position. Ground is provided at G302. The rear compartment courtesy lamp (sedan) and the cargo lamp (extended sedan) illuminate whenever the rear decklid is open. Ground is provided at G302 through the rear compartment lid latch switch (sedan) or the cargo lamp switch (extended sedan). The vanity mirror lamps illuminate whenever they are opened. Ground is provided at G302.
Circuit/System Verification
1. Ignition ON, all doors closed. Place the dome lamp in the DOOR position. The interior courtesy lamps should not be illuminated.
^ If the interior courtesy lamps are illuminated, refer to Courtesy Lamps Always On.
2. Open and close each door. The dome lamp and the front courtesy/reading lamps should illuminate when each door is opened.
^ If the dome lamp and the front courtesy/reading lamps do not illuminate, refer to Courtesy Lamps Inoperative From Door.
3. Place the reading lamps in the ON position. The reading lamps should illuminate. If the reading lamp does not illuminate, refer to Reading Lamp Inoperative.
4. Open the rear compartment. Command the rear compartment courtesy lamp ON and OFF with a scan tool. The rear compartment courtesy lamp should turn ON and OFF when changing between the commanded states.
^ If the rear compartment courtesy lamp does not turn ON and OFF, refer to Rear Compartment Lamp Inoperative.
Circuit/System Testing
Courtesy Lamps Always On
1. Observe the door ajar indicator in the instrument panel cluster. The door ajar indicator should not be illuminated.
^ If the door ajar indicator is illuminated, refer to Door Ajar Indicator Malfunction.
2. Test the courtesy lamp control circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
Courtesy Lamps Inoperative From Door
1. Open and close each door while observing the door ajar indicator. The door ajar indicator should illuminate when each door is open.
^ If the door ajar indicator does not illuminate, refer to Door Ajar Indicator Malfunction.
2. Test the courtesy lamp control circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
Reading Lamp Inoperative
1. Disconnect the harness connector at the inoperative reading lamp.
2. Verify that a test lamp illuminates between the ground circuit terminal A and B+.
^ If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the ground circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance.
3. Replace the inoperative reading lamp.
Rear Compartment Lamp Inoperative
1. Ignition ON, observe the scan tool Trunk Ajar Switch parameter while opening and closing the rear compartment lid, the parameter should change between Trunk Closed and Trunk Ajar.
^ If the parameter does not change, refer to Trunk Ajar Indicator Malfunction
2. Disconnect the rear compartment courtesy lamp. Connect a test lamp between the control circuit terminal A and B+. The test lamp should illuminate.
^ If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the control circuit for an open or high resistance.
3. Connect a test lamp between the B+ circuit terminal B and ground. The test lamp should illuminate.
^ If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the B+ circuit for an open or high resistance.
4. Replace the rear compartment courtesy lamp.
