Subject: Snapping or Popping Noise from Rear of Door or Lock Pillar Area (Replace Door Latch Striker)

Models:
2008-2010 Chevrolet Corvette

Condition

Some customers may comment about a snapping or popping noise coming from the rear of the door or lock pillar area. This condition is most noticeable when the vehicle is being driven over rough and uneven road surfaces. It may also be noticed during slow speed conditions, such as parking lots and driveway approaches.

Cause

This condition may be caused by excessive clearance in the front side door lock striker. The door lock striker is located on the door and the latch is on the body.

Correction

Use the following steps to diagnose and repair the condition.

Diagnosis
1. Open the door on the affected side of the vehicle and locate the door lock striker mounted on the door.
2. Apply hand pressure to the striker in an up/down and side to side motion and listen for a clicking type sound.
3. If the lock striker makes a clicking noise, use the steps below to replace the striker. If no noise is heard, diagnose the condition using standard procedures found in SI.

Repair Procedure
1. Remove the front side door trim panel on the affected side. Refer to Front Side Door Trim Panel Replacement in SI.

2. Remove the large water deflector (1) for inside access to the rear of the door.
3. Mark the striker location on the outer door edge.

4. Remove the striker fasteners (1) from the inside of the door.
5. Remove the striker (2).
6. Position the new striker onto the door with the latching pin toward the door latch.
7. Install the fasteners snugly onto the striker.
8. Align the striker to the previous marks. Tighten the fasteners.

Tighten
Tighten the door lock striker screws to 24 Nm (18 lb ft).

9. Install the large water deflector (1) to the rear of the door.
10. Reinstall the front side door trim panel on the affected side. Refer to Front Side Door Trim Panel Replacement in SI.
11. Verify the fit of the panels and the operation of the door latch by using the manual and electric door release.
