TECHNICAL

Bulletin No.: 08-08-44-014

Date: May 02, 2008

Subject:
Rear Radio Speaker Rattle, Sound Distortion (Check Rear Speaker Mounting Tabs)

Models:
2008 Chevrolet Malibu

Condition

Some customers may comment on a rear speaker rattle noise or sound distortion when the radio setting is in the lower (bass) frequency range. The noise could be coming from one or both of the rear speakers.

Cause

This condition may be caused by the rear speaker mounting tab(s) not engaging the package shelf correctly.

Correction

Technicians are to verify that the speaker mounting tabs are seated correctly by following the procedure outlined below. The two speaker mounting tabs should be level or slightly bent upwards.

Important:
DO NOT replace the speaker.

1. Access the rear radio speakers. Refer to Radio Rear Speaker Replacement in SI.

2. Remove the speaker(s) that is making noise.

3. Check that the two mounting tabs are level or slightly bent upward. The figure above shows the mounting tab on the left as bent down (incorrect) and the mounting on the right at level (correct).

4. Reinstall the speaker(s) and test for noise before installing the package shelf trim.
