Interior - Rear Console Cup Holder Door Won't Close

TECHNICAL

Bulletin No.: 08-08-49-015

Date: September 26, 2008

Subject:
Rear Console Cup Holder Door Becomes Dislodged Under Load and May Not Close and/or Door Separates From Rear Floor Console (Align Hinge Pins and Re-Install Spring)

Models:
2008-2009 Chevrolet Malibu

Condition

Some customers may comment that the rear console cup holder door may not close and/or the door separates from the rear floor console.

Cause

The cup holder door may become disengaged from the rear floor console housing tracks when excessive downward or sideways force is applied to the cup holder while in the open or down position. This condition may also cause the return spring to dislodge, not allowing the door to close.

Correction

Align the hinge pins and re-install the spring using the steps below.

1. Remove the rear floor console cover assembly from the console. Refer to Front Floor Console Rear Cover Replacement in SI.

2. Remove the folding cup holder door assembly from the rear console cover by carefully prying on the lower hinge pins (1).

3. Separate the folding cup holder inner panel from the outer panel by squeezing the two tabs (1) located at the forward end of the rectangular hole to disengage the panels.

4. Remove the spring from the console end tab by twisting the spring free.

5. Re-install the cup holder inner panel (1) ONLY by snapping the two lower end clips over the hinge pins inside the rear console cover.

6. Fold the cup holder inner panel to the closed position and install the large end of the coil spring through the small hole (1) inside the console cover tab.

7. Hold the console cover assembly in one hand and carefully fold the other end of the coil spring down into the inner panel so that the coil spring seats into the two slots. The first slot (1) and second slot (2) inside the inner door panel ribs just below the cup holder depressions.

8. The opposite end of the spring (1) should be seated into the inner panel ribbing.

9. Install the grained outer panel by opening the cup holder from the console cover about 1/3 of the way. The lip (1) on the outer grained end panel fits over the upper edge of the cup holder inner panel.

10. Snap the lower end of the outer grained panel back into the cup holder inner panel, completing the assembly of the console rear cover assembly.

11. Begin to install the console rear cover assembly back into the console by connecting the electrical connectors.

12. Finish installing the bottom console rear cover tabs into the console then seat the two upper retainers.

13. Verify the condition has been corrected by cycling the cup holder door four complete cycles.
