Subject:
Rattle Noise From Rear Window Shelf (Align Speaker Mounting Tabs)
Models:
2008-2009 Chevrolet Malibu
2007-2009 Saturn AURA
All with RPO UW5 or UQ3
Condition
Some customers may comment about a rattling noise coming from the left or right rear window shelf area. This condition may occur when driving or when the radio is played at loud volume levels.
Cause
This condition may be caused by the mounting tabs on the speaker assembly being bent. If the tabs are bent they may not retain the speaker securely and allow the speaker(s) to rattle.
Correction
Important
Do not replace the speaker assembly if a bent mounting tab is the only issue with the speaker assembly.
1. Remove the affected rear speaker. Refer to Radio Rear Speaker Replacement in SI.
2. Place the speaker on a level surface.
3. Measure the distance between the mounting tab and the surface. On vehicles equipped with RPO UW5, this distance should be 73 mm +/ - 1 mm (2-7/8 in).
If the vehicle is equipped with RPO UQ3, the distance should be 86 mm +/- 1 mm (3-3/8 in).
4. If the mounting tab(s) are out of position, gently bend the tab(s) into position. Hand pressure is sufficient to bend the tab(s) the required distance.
5. Reinstall the speaker. Verify the condition is corrected before reinstalling the rear shelf trim panel. Refer to Radio Rear Speaker Replacement in SI.
