Diagnostic Fault Information
Circuit/System Description
The camshaft position (CMP) actuator system enables the engine control module (ECM) to change the timing of the camshafts while the engine is operating. The ECM supplies a low reference circuit, and a pulse width modulated (PWM) control circuit to the CMP actuator solenoid. The ECM controls the CMP actuator solenoid duty cycle by controlling the amount of solenoid ON time. The CMP actuator solenoid controls the advance or the retard of each camshaft. The CMP actuator solenoid controls the oil flow that applies the pressure to advance or retard the camshafts.
The ECM controls the solenoid with a solid state device called a driver. The driver is equipped with a feedback circuit that is pulled-up to a voltage. The ECM can determine if the control circuit is open, shorted to ground, or shorted to a voltage by monitoring the feedback voltage.
Conditions for Running the DTC
* DTC P0010, P0013, P0016, P0017, P0335, P0336, P0340, P0341, P0365, or P0366 is not set.
* The engine is running.
* The ignition voltage is between 11-18 volts.
* The CMP actuator is enabled.
* The rate of change in the desired camshaft position is less than 5 degrees for 4 seconds.
Conditions for Setting the DTC
The ECM detects a difference of greater than 8 degrees between the CMP Angle position and the Desired CMP position for greater than 30 seconds.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
DTCs P0011 and P0014 are Type B DTCs.
Conditions for Clearing the DTC
DTCs P0011 and P0014 are Type B DTCs.
Diagnostic Aids
* The engine oil condition has a major impact on the camshaft actuator system.
* A low oil level condition may set this DTC. The engine may require an oil change. Inquire with the customer when the last oil change was performed. You may also monitor the scan tool Engine Oil Life parameter. Advise the customer an oil change may be required.
* Inspect the engine for any recent engine mechanical repairs. An incorrectly installed camshaft, camshaft actuator, or timing belt can cause this DTC to set.
* A resistance greater than 8 ohm on the CMP actuator solenoid control circuit may set this DTC. If you suspect high resistance, ground the control circuit while the engine is idling. The scan tool CMP Sol Ckt Short Gnd Test Status parameter should display Fault. If the parameter displays OK, test the control circuit for high resistance.

Circuit/System Verification
Note: The engine oil level and the oil pressure are critical to the correct operation of the camshaft position (CMP) actuator system. Verify that the engine has the correct oil level and the correct oil pressure before continuing with this diagnostic. Refer to Engine Mechanical Specifications (Specifications).
1. Engine idling at operating temperature, command the appropriate CMP actuator solenoid to 20 degrees with a scan tool. The CMP Desired parameter value should match the CMP Angle parameter value.
2. Observe the CMP Variance value on the scan tool. The CMP Variance value will increment for several seconds until the CMP Angle value matches the Desired CMP value. The CMP Variance value should then return to 0 degrees.
3. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that are captured in the Freeze Fame/Failure Records Data List.
Circuit/System Testing
1. Ignition OFF for 1 minute, disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate camshaft position (CMP) actuator solenoid.
2. Test for less than 5 ohm between the low reference circuit terminal 2 and ground.
• If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.
3. Ignition ON, test for 2-3 V between the control circuit terminal 1 and ground.
• If less than the specified range, test the control circuit for a short to ground, or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.
• If greater than the specified range, test the control circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the ECM.
4. Command the CMP actuator solenoid ON and OFF with a scan tool. The DMM should transition from 2-3 V when commanded OFF to greater than 10 V, when commanded ON.
• If the circuit voltage does not correspond to the specified values, replace the ECM.
5. Remove the CMP actuator solenoid. Inspect the CMP actuator solenoid and mounting area for the following conditions:
* For a torn, restricted, mis-positioned, or missing screens at the CMP actuator solenoid
* For engine oil leaks between the oil sealing lands of the CMP actuator solenoid-Inspect the lands of the CMP actuator solenoid for nicks
* For oil seepage at the CMP actuator solenoid connector
• If a condition is found, replace CMP actuator solenoid.
6. Ignition OFF, swap the suspected CMP actuator solenoid with a CMP actuator solenoid that is operating correctly.
Note: This step is testing the mechanical CMP actuator for the camshaft that set the DTC.
7. Engine idling, command the appropriate camshaft actuator to 20 degrees and back to 0 while observing the appropriate scan tool CMP Angle Variance parameter. The CMP Angle Variance should be less than 2 degrees in each of the commanded states.
• If greater than the specified value, replace the mechanical camshaft position (CMP) actuator.
8. If all circuits/connections test normal, test or replace the CMP actuator solenoid.
Component Testing
1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate CMP actuator solenoid.
2. Test for 7-12 ohm between the terminals of the CMP actuator solenoid.
• If not within the specified range, replace the CMP actuator solenoid.
3. Test for infinite resistance between each terminal and the CMP actuator solenoid housing.
• If not the specified value, replace the CMP actuator solenoid valve.
Repair Instructions
Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification (Verification Tests) after completing the diagnostic procedure.
