TECHNICAL

Bulletin No.: 09-06-03-005

Date: June 22, 2009

Subject: Vehicle Won't Shift Out of Park, Inoperative IPC/Dimmer Switch and/or Open Fuses After Jump Starting (Inspect/Replace Open Fuses, Cluster and/or Dimmer Switch)

Models:
2009 Chevrolet Aveo
2009 Pontiac G3, G3 Wave

Condition

Some customers may comment that after their vehicle was jump started, the shifter won't shift out of park. The instrument panel cluster (IPC) dimmer switch may also be inoperative. Upon investigation, the technician may find several fuses may be open.

Cause

These conditions may be a result of the vehicle being jump started with the jumper cables reversed.

Correction

If the vehicle is found with these concerns, perform the following inspection/replacement.

1. Inspect all the fuses in the UBEC and I/P fuse block (1). Replace any open fuses.

2. Inspect the 100A fuse (1) located on the positive battery cable. Replace the 100A fuse if it is open.
3. Verify operation of the brake transmission shift interlock (BTSI) system. If the shifter will not shift out of park with the ignition on and the brake pedal depressed, replace the instrument panel cluster (IPC). Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement in SI.
4. Inspect the I/P dimming feature. If inoperative, replace the I/P dimmer switch with GM P/N 96652255, following these steps:

1. Remove the side fuse panel cover (1) using a trim tool.

2. Remove the two nuts (1) that hold the fuse box to the bracket.

3. Reposition the fuse box (1) as shown above.

4. Reach through the fuse box opening and push to release the I/P dimmer switch from the inside of the panel.

5. Disconnect the I/P dimmer switch (1). Replace the switch with GM P/N 96652255.
6. To install the I/P dimmer switch, reverse the above steps.
