Subject:
Engine Cranks with No Start or Engine Has Extended Crank Before Starting in Cold Ambient Temperatures (Use Recommended Engine Oil and Install Engine Oil Heater)
Models:
2009 Chevrolet Aveo
2009 Pontiac G3 Wave
with 1.6L 4-Cylinder Engine (VIN 6 - RPO LXV)
Condition
Some customers may comment on a no start or an extended crank during a cold start. This condition typically occurs only when the ambient temperatures fall below -20°F (-29°C).
Correction
Caution:
Use only engine oil identified as meeting GM Standard GM6094M and showing the American Petroleum Institute Certified For Gasoline Engines starburst symbol. Failure to use the recommended oil can result in engine damage not covered by your warranty.
If a customer is in a extremely cold area where the temperature falls below -20°F (-29°C), it is recommended that they use an engine oil with an SAE viscosity grade of 0W-30 and install an engine oil heater (standard on vehicles sold in Canada). This will provide easier cold starting and better protection for the engine at extremely low temperatures. For additional oil requirements, refer to Vehicle Service and Care in the vehicle's Owner Manual.
Note:
Please inform the customer that the engine oil heater should be plugged in a minimum of three hours prior to starting the vehicle.
Using the parts listed below, follow this procedure to install the engine oil heater.
1. Open the hood.
2. Insert the engine oil pan heater power cable (1), P/N 96867475, into the empty space between the right side of engine and brake fluid reservoir tank.
3. Install the engine oil pan heater power cable (1), P/N 96867475, onto the lower hole of the engine bracket with a tie strap.
4. Raise and support the vehicle.
5. Apply a 2.5 mm (0.098 in) bead of GM Super Lube(R) with PTFE, P/N 12371287 (in Canada, P/N 10953437) or equivalent, non-melting high thermal silicone paste to the backside of engine oil pan heater, P/N 96898044, as shown.
6. Install the engine oil pan heater (1), P/N 96898044, to the backside of engine oil pan with two bolts, P/N 94502072.
Tighten
Tighten the two bolts to 8 Nm (71 lb in.).
7. Connect the engine oil pan heater power cable (1), P/N 96867475, to the oil pan heater connector.
8. Install the connector (1), P/N 94719599.
