Subject: Popping Noise From Hinge When Opening/Closing Door (Free Up Lower Hinge Check Link Roller)

Models:
2009-2010 Chevrolet Corvette

Condition

Some customers may comment on hearing a popping noise when opening/closing the driver or passenger door.

Cause

This condition may be caused by the roller on the door check link being coated with paint, which seizes movement of the roller and prevents it from rolling as intended.

Correction

Important
Adding a lubricant alone will not correct this condition.

Free up the movement of the roller by following the steps below:

1. Open the door and wipe all oil/lube off of the interface of the check link (1) and hinge roller (2).

Important
Wrap the pry bar with a shop towel in order to prevent damage to the paint.

2. Using a suitable pry bar (3) between the link and the hinge, apply pressure to move the link (1) away from the roller (2).
3. While keeping pressure on the link, manually rotate the roller to free it from paint. Once the roller moves, release the pry bar from the link
4. Open and close the door several times while watching the roller. The roller should rotate as the link moves across the face.
5. If the roller does not rotate, apply several drops of penetrating oil (i.e. WD-40(R) or equivalent) and allow it set for five minutes. After setting for five minutes, the roller should be able to be freed up by repeating Steps 1-4.
