Some customers may comment that road debris has found its way in between the outer quarter panel and rocker, and is visible in the gap between the two panels. This condition may be caused by debris being carried up by the tires and collecting in the gap between the panels. An example of this condition is shown in the graphic above.

The purpose of this bulletin is to provide information regarding a repair that can be utilized to reduce the amount of debris that is being trapped. Installing adhesive back foam shim stock to the inner surface of the quarter panel, and to the outer rocker panel, can reduce the collection of this debris in the gap between the panels.

Repair Procedure

Install the shim stock following the instructions below:

Note
It is not necessary to remove the rear fascia for this repair. The shim stock installation locations can be accessed by removing the forward and top quarter panel fasteners (1), and pulling the quarter panel outboard.

1. Remove the front lower rear wheelhouse liner fastener, then the forward and top quarter panel fasteners enough to gain access to the forward area between the quarter and the rocker panel, shown circled above. Refer to Quarter Panel Replacement in SI.
2. Clean any road debris from between the quarter and side door opening/rocker panels. Also clean the area of shim stock application to remove any grease or dirt.

3. Install approximately 70 mm (2.75 in) length of Kent Automotive Adhesive back Shim Stock P/N 46515, or equivalent, to the angled step of the rocker panel, as shown in the graphic above. Ensure the 25 mm (1 in) width is cross-car on the step and the foam is applied starting at the top edge of the panel.

4. Install approximately 275 mm (10.8 in) length of Kent Automotive Adhesive back Shim Stock P/N 46500, or equivalent, to the lower inner surface of the quarter panel, as shown in the graphic above. Ensure the 19 mm (0.750 in) width is applied in the vertical direction and the foam wraps around the corner and onto the rear flange of the panel.
5. Reposition the quarter panel and install the fasteners. Refer to Quarter Panel Replacement in SI.

Note
The illustration below, which has the outer surface of the quarter panel turned off, shows the interface of the rocker foam (1) to the quarter foam (2) when the quarter panel is repositioned.
