TECHNICAL

Bulletin No.: 09-05-22-002

Date: February 18, 2009

Subject:
Vehicle Brake System Diagnosis - Inspect Clearance of Brake Pedal Arm to Mag Beam (Replace Brake Pedal Push Rod)

Models:
2009 Chevrolet Impala

Built from SOP through VIN Breakpoint 91239963

Condition

On rare occasions, customers may comment that the brakes seem to have a slight apply.

Cause

The brake pedal arm may cause the brake pedal not to return fully to the rest position

Correction

1. Verify the customer's concern.

2. Inspect the clearance between the brake pedal arm (1) in the rest position to the mag beam (2). A 5 to 6 mm (0.20 to 0.24 in) clearance is acceptable. If the clearance is less than 5 mm (0.20 in), replace the brake pedal push rod with GM P/N 25861855. If clearance is adequate (5 mm [0.20 in] or greater), check other brake components as directed in SI.

3. Remove the power vacuum brake booster from the vehicle. Refer to Power Vacuum Brake Booster Replacement in SI.

4. Place the vacuum brake booster on a bench. Using a flat blade screwdriver (3), slide the foam boot (2) back to gain access to the clip (1). Remove the clip (1) and slide the brake pedal push rod out.

5. Install a plastic bushing, GM P/N 10434956 (2), in a new brake pedal push rod (1), GM P/N 25861855.

6. Install the new brake pedal push rod and bushing assembly into the brake booster. Install the clip.

7. Install the vacuum brake booster. Refer to Power Vacuum Brake Booster Installation in SI.
