Condition 1
Some customers may comment about the rear bumper fascia contacting the body on the left and/or right side of the rear bumper fascia in the tail lamp area. This contact condition may lead to a peeling paint condition. This condition appears along the edge of the fascia where it meets the rear quarter panel, between the tail lamp and rear side marker lamp.
Cause 1
This condition may be caused by a ridge in the fascia material under the paint, on the edge of the fascia. This ridge creates a high spot that can come in contact with the body sheet metal. This contact may rub through the paint and cause the paint to peel away from the fascia.
Correction 1
Correction - No Paint Damage
The clearance between the rear bumper fascia and the body sheet metal can be adjusted to correct the condition. Use the following steps to replace the push pin fastener with a J-nut and bolt.
1. Open the rear compartment lid and locate the upper rear fascia retainers (three per side).
2. Remove the inner upper retainer.
3. Install the J-clip on the bracket as shown.
4. Install the bolt but do not tighten it.
5. Pull the fascia rearward to create an even gap between the fascia and the body.
6. While holding the fascia in position, tighten the fastener.
Tighten
Tighten the fastener to 7 Nm (62 lb in).
7. Repeat the procedure on the other side of the vehicle.
Correction - With Peeling Paint
Use the following steps to correct the condition if the rear bumper fascia paint is peeling.
1. Remove the rear bumper fascia. Refer to Rear Bumper Fascia Replacement in SI.
2. Sand down the ridge on the fascia, as shown, in order to remove the hard edge and allow clearance to the body.
3. Repair any peeling paint.
4. Color/clearcoat as required.
5. Install the rear bumper fascia. Refer to Rear Bumper Fascia Replacement in SI.
6. Install the J-clips on the left and right sides as described in Step 3 of the previous procedure.
7. Install the bolts but do not tighten them.
8. Pull the fascia rearward to create an even gap between the fascia and the body.
9. While holding the fascia in position, tighten the fasteners.
Tighten
Tighten the fasteners to 7 Nm (62 lb in).
Condition 2
Some customers may comment that the paint is peeling on the front bumper fascia. This condition appears along the edge on the top of the fascia where it meets the fender, outboard of the hood opening area. It may also appear between the side marker lamp area and the wheel opening area.
Cause 2
This condition may be caused by a ridge in the fascia material under the paint, on the edge of the fascia. This ridge creates a high spot that can come in contact with the body sheet metal. This contact may rub through the paint and cause the paint to peel away from the fascia.
Correction 2
Use the following steps to correct the condition if the front bumper fascia paint is peeling.
1. Remove the front bumper fascia. Refer to Front Bumper Fascia Replacement in SI.
2. Sand down the ridge on the fascia, as shown, in order to remove the hard edge and allow clearance to the body.
3. Repair any peeling paint.
4. Color/clearcoat as required.
5. Reinstall the front bumper fascia. Refer to Front Bumper Fascia Replacement in SI.
