Wheels/Tires - 21 Inch Wheel Balancing Procedure

INFORMATION

Bulletin No.: 09-03-10-006

Date: April 29, 2009

Subject: 2010 Camaro 21 Inch Aluminum Wheel Balancing Procedure - Avoiding Out of Balance Tires and Vibration by Using Specific Balancer Procedure

Models:
2010 Chevrolet Camaro
Equipped with Limited Promotional Option (LPO) 21" Wheels (VZP, VZN)

Dealers may become aware that the 2010 Camaro equipped with 21" rear wheels may exhibit a smooth road shake (vibration) at highway speeds before and/or after a wheel balance is performed. This is the result of wheels that may not mate-up to conventional wheel balancing machines as expected.

Wheel Identification

Only the 21" wheels identified below by the LPO Codes and built before April 1, 2009 are the subject of this bulletin.

The photo above illustrates the markings present on the inner surface of the wheels. The marking (1) shows the current revised wheel design and marking (2) is an example of a wheel that is the subject of the bulletin.

For affected wheels, refer to the proper balancing procedure below.

Wheel Balancing Procedure

Notice:
This wheel is the only exception to the GM guidelines on using the button cap retention hole as a balancing surface.

1. Place the small spacer on the balancer spindle prior to installing the cone.

2. Place the cone (Coats 8112098 or Hunter 192-51-2) on the spindle.

Caution:
Verify the cone is clean and free of debris.

3. Place the tire and wheel assembly on the spindle (inboard side first) and align the cone through the pilot hole to the button cap retention hole.

The cone will go through the pilot hole without making contact and will align with the button cap retention hole inside surface. This will not damage the wheel if the cone is clean and free of debris.

Caution:
Verify the clamp is clean and that any gaskets are present and in good condition. Clamping with a hard surface directly on the wheel may cause cosmetic damage to the wheel.

4. Clamp wheel in place on the spindle using a padded clamp cone.

5. Spin the tire and wheel assembly to make sure it spins true without a visible wobble.

6. Balance the tire and wheel assembly following the tire balancing machine instructions.

7. Balance the tire and wheel assembly again to assure repeatability.
