Condition
Some customers may comment that the rear compartment (trunk) lid won't open or that they need to apply downward pressure to the lid while unlatching it. The customer may also comment that the lid won't latch even when slammed. This condition may be intermittent. The latch can be released using the Emergency Trunk Release (ETR) release handle located on the inside of the rear compartment lid.
Cause #1 (For Vehicles Built Prior to March 10, 2010)
This condition may be caused by the latch (located on the rear compartment lid) binding with the latch striker (located on the rear body panel). This condition may also be caused by the ETR handle binding on the rear compartment lid carpet.
Correction #1
Use the following steps to replace the rear compartment latch and striker and install hook and loop material to the ETR handle.
1. Replace the rear compartment lid latch. Refer to Rear Compartment Lid Latch Replacement in SI.
2. Replace the rear compartment lid latch striker. Refer to Rear Compartment Lid Latch Striker Replacement in SI.
3. Ensure that the ETR handle is pushed fully toward the latch before the hook and loop material is applied.
4. Install a 25 mm x 25 mm (1.0 in x 1.0 in) piece of hook and loop material, such as 3M(TM) Scotchmate Hook and Loop Fastening System*, P/N051131-06480, or the equivalent, to the ETR handle as shown. This will prevent the ETR handle from moving out of position when not in use.
Cause #2 (For Vehicles Built After March 10, 2010)
This condition may be caused by the ETR handle binding on the rear compartment lid carpet.
Correction #2
Use the following steps to install hook and loop material to the ETR handle.
1. Ensure that the ETR handle is pushed fully toward the latch before the hook and loop material is applied.
