DTC 5045

DTC 5045

Diagnostic Instructions

* Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle (Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle) prior to using this diagnostic procedure.
* Review Strategy Based Diagnosis (Strategy Based Diagnosis) for an overview of the diagnostic approach.
* Diagnostic Procedure Instructions (Diagnostic Procedure Instructions)provides an overview of each diagnostic category.

DTC Descriptor
DTC 5045
- Passenger Occupant Classification Sensor Circuit Erratic

Circuit/System Description

The passenger presence system (PPS) is used to monitor the pressure profile of any occupant that is sitting in the front outboard passenger seat and communicates the profile classification to the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM). The SDM will either enable or suppress the deployment of the passenger frontal airbag module based on the profile classification of the occupant. If the PPS detects the following faults, short to battery, ground or open high resistance it will set DTC 300A, 301A, 303A-303E, 305A-305C or 3003-3059. The PPS will then communicate to the SDM through a dedicated serial data circuit that a PPS fault is present. The SDM will set DTC B0081 indicating a problem within the PPS and suppress the deployment of the passenger frontal airbag module and illuminate the AIR BAG indicator.

Conditions for Running the DTC

Ignition voltage is between 9-16 V.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

* The SDM has received a fault message from the PSS module.
* The PPS detects a wet seat fault if DTC 5045 is set.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

* The PPS will set a DTC, and then communicate with the SDM.
* The SDM will set DTC B0081.
* The SDM will disable the passenger frontal air bag module deployment loop.
* The PPS will illuminate the passenger air bag status OFF indicator.
* The SDM requests the instrument cluster to illuminate the AIR BAG warning indicator.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

* The condition for setting the DTC no longer exists.
* A history DTC will clear once 100 malfunction-free ignition cycles have occurred.

Circuit/System Testing

Note: The PPS is a calibrated unit. When replacing the assembly all parts in the service it must remain together. Do not mix any of the old part with the new parts. The PPS service kit contains, seat foam, pressure sensor and PPS module (if applicable).

Note: Do not place the following electronic devices on the front passenger seat, computers, MP3 players, cell phones or scan tools. These devices may interfere with operation of the PPS, by generating electric fields causing the PPS module to set DTC 5045.

Note: When removing connectors inspect for damage or corrosion. Damage or corrosion in the following requires repair or replacement of the affected component/connector.

* PPS module
* PPS wiring harness connector

Verify that DTC 5045 is not set.

If the DTC is set, verify that the seat is dry by removing the trim form the seat bottom frame. If the seat is wet, allow 24-48 hours dry time and the follow the repair procedure Inflatable Restraint Passenger Presence System Replacement - Front (with SS) ()Inflatable Restraint Passenger Presence System Replacement - Front (without SS - UD0) (Service and Repair). If the DTC is history, do not replace the PPS module. Clear PPS DTCs.

Repair Instructions

Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification (Verification Tests) after completing the diagnostic procedure.
