Diagnostic Instructions

* Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle (Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle) prior to using this diagnostic procedure.
* Review Strategy Based Diagnosis (Strategy Based Diagnosis) for an overview of the diagnostic approach.
* Diagnostic Procedure Instructions (Diagnostic Procedure Instructions) provides an overview of each diagnostic category.

Circuit/System Description

This diagnostic procedure applies to all instrument panel clusters (IPC) that use serial data as input for gauge, telltale and message functions. This includes the speedometer, tachometer, engine coolant temperature gauge. charge/assist gauge (hybrid only), indicators, digital messages, etc.

Circuit/System Verification

Note: If the suspect gauge is the speedometer, the drive wheels of the vehicle must be raised and the transmission must be placed in drive or first gear. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Service and Repair).

1. Ignition ON and the scan tool installed, perform all the IPC special function tests listed in for the IPC Output Controls. Verify that all gauge dials move from minimum to the maximum value, back to the gauge minimum value, all telltales/digital segments light and the IPC dim function operates correctly.
Tests that may be available depend on application are: IPC Gauge Sweep Test, Lamps, Telltales, Segment test, Dimming.

If any of the above functions do not operate correctly replace the IPC.

2. Start the engine with the vehicle drive wheels raised and place the transmission in drive or first gear. Verify that the speedometer value matches the scan tool Vehicle Speed parameter in the ECM Engine Data List.

If the speedometer is incorrect, test or replace the IPC.

Repair Instructions

Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification (Verification Tests) after completing the diagnostic procedure.
