Circuit/System Description
The passenger presence system (PPS) is used to monitor the pressure profile of any occupant that is sitting in the front passenger seat and communicates the profile classification to the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM). The SDM will either enable or suppress the deployment of the passenger instrument panel air bag based on the profile classification of the occupant. If the PPS module detects that a malfunction with the communication circuit then the PPS module will then set a DTC within the PPS. The SDM will then set DTC B0081 indicating a problem within the PPS module and will suppress the deployment of the passenger instrument panel air bag and then illuminate the AIR BAG indicator.
Conditions for Running the DTC
Ignition voltage is between 9-16 volts.
Conditions for Setting the DTC
The PPS module has never established or lost communications with the SDM.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
* The PPS module will set a DTC, and then communicate with the SDM via non GMLAN circuit.
* The SDM will set DTC B0081.
* The SDM disables the passenger instrument panel air bag deployment loop.
* The PPS module will illuminate the passenger air bag status OFF indicator.
* The SDM requests the instrument panel cluster (IPC) to illuminate the AIR BAG indicator.
Conditions for Clearing the DTC
* The condition responsible for setting the DTC no longer exists and the scan tool Clear DTCs function is used.
* A history DTC will clear once 255 malfunction-free ignition cycles have occurred.

Circuit/System Testing
Important: When removing connectors inspect for damage or corrosion. Damage or corrosion in the following requires repair or replacement of the affected component/connector.
* PPS module
* SDM
* PPS module wiring harness connector
* SDM wiring harness connector
1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the PPS module and the SDM.
2. Test for less than 1 volt between the PPS module serial data circuit terminal B and ground.
• If greater than the specified range, test the circuit for a short to voltage.
3. Test for infinite resistance between the PPS module serial data circuit terminal B and ground.
• If less than the specified value, test the circuit for a short to ground.
4. Test for less than 1 ohm between the SDM serial data circuit terminal 60 and the PPS module serial data circuit terminal B.
• If greater than the specified range, test the circuit for an open/high resistance.
5. If all circuits test normal, replace the SDM.
6. Verify DTC 1058-1062 is not set.
• If DTC is set, replace the PPS module.
Repair Instructions
Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification (Verification Tests) after completing the diagnostic procedure.
