Circuit Description
The heated oxygen sensors (HO2S) are used for fuel control and catalyst monitoring. Each HO2S compares the oxygen content of the surrounding air with the oxygen content of the exhaust stream. When the engine is started, the control module operates in an Open Loop mode, ignoring the HO2S signal voltage while calculating the air-to-fuel ratio. The control module supplies the HO2S with a reference, or bias voltage of about 450 mV. While the engine runs, the HO2S heats up and begins to generate a voltage within a range of 0-1,000 mV. This voltage will fluctuate above and below the bias voltage. Once sufficient HO2S voltage fluctuation is observed by the control module, Closed Loop is entered. The control module uses the HO2S voltage to determine the air-to-fuel ratio. An HO2S voltage that increases above bias voltage toward 1,000 mV indicates a rich fuel mixture. An HO2S voltage that decreases below bias voltage toward 0 mV indicates a lean fuel mixture.
The heating elements inside each HO2S heat the sensor to bring the sensor up to operating conditions faster. This allows the system to enter Closed Loop earlier and the control module to calculate the air-to-fuel ratio sooner.
Conditions for Running the DTCs
P0137 and P0157
* DTC P0036, P0037, P0038, P0056, P0057, P0058, P0116, P0117, P0118, P0119, or P0128 is not set.
* The engine speed is greater than 240 RPM.
* The ignition voltage is greater than 10 V.
* The engine coolant temperature is colder than 40°C (104°F) at start-up and the engine coolant temperature was warmer than 60°C (140°F) when the ignition was turned OFF last ignition cycle.
* The calculated exhaust temperature at the HO2S 2 is warmer than 700°C (1,292°F) and the HO2S 2 is warmed up for greater than 90 s.
* The calculated exhaust temperature is colder than 800°C (1472°F) 5 s after engine start.
* DTCs P0137 and P0157 run continuously once the above conditions are met.
P0138, P0140, P0158, and P0160
* The engine speed is greater than 240 RPM.
* The ignition voltage is greater than 10 V.
* The HO2S 2 heater duty cycle is stable and the HO2S 2 is warmed up for greater than 90 s.
* The calculated exhaust temperature is colder than 800°C (1472°F).
* DTCs P0138 and P0158 run continuously once the above conditions are met for greater than 5 s.
* DTCs P0140 and P0160 run continuously once the above conditions are met for greater than 60 s.
Conditions for Setting the DTC
P0137 or P0157
The ECM detects the HO2S 2 signal voltage is less than 60 mV for greater than 1 s of for a cumulative of 10 s.
P0138 or P0158
The ECM detects the HO2S 2 signal voltage is greater than 1,150 mV for greater than 1 s or for a cumulative of 10 s.
P0140 or P0160
* The ECM detects that the HO2S 2 signal voltage is between 401-519 mV.
OR
* The ECM detects that the measured internal resistance of the HO2S 2 is greater than 40,000 ohm, when the calculated exhaust temperature is warmer than 500°C (932°F).
* Either condition exists for greater than 1 s or for a cumulative of 10 s.
Action Taken when the DTC Sets
DTCs P0137, P0138, P0140, P0157, P0158, and P0160 are Type B DTCs.
Conditions for Clearing the MIL/DTC
DTCs P0137, P0138, P0140, P0157, P0158, and P0160 are Type B DTCs.

Circuit/System Verification
1. Engine idling, observe the appropriate scan tool HO2S 2 voltage parameter. The reading should fluctuate above and below the range of 401-519 mV.
2. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data.
Circuit/System Testing
1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate B52 HO2S.
2. Ignition ON, verify that the scan tool HO2S 2 voltage parameter is between 400-520 mV.
• If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit terminal B or 4 for a short to ground. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the K20 ECM.
• If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit terminal B or 4 for a short to voltage. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the K20 ECM.
3. Connect a 3 A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal B or 4 and ground. Verify the scan tool HO2S voltage parameter is less than 60 mV.
• If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the K20 ECM.
4. Connect a 3 A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal B or 4 and the low reference circuit terminal A or 3. Verify the scan tool HO2S voltage parameter is less than 60 mV.
• If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance or for a short to voltage. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the K20 ECM.
5. Verify that the following conditions do not exist:
* Lean, rich, or leaking fuel injectors.
* A fuel pressure that is too low or too high-Refer to Fuel System Diagnosis (Fuel System Diagnosis).
* Fuel that is contaminated-Refer to Alcohol/Contaminants-in-Fuel Diagnosis (Special Tool) (Alcohol/Contaminants-In-Fuel Diagnosis (Special Tool))Alcohol/Contaminants-in-Fuel Diagnosis (Without Special Tool) (Alcohol/Contaminants-In-Fuel Diagnosis (Without Special Tool)).
* Evidence of water intrusion into the electrical connector of the HO2S
* The HO2S is loose
* Exhaust leaks near the HO2S
* Engine vacuum leaks
• If you find any of the above conditions, repair as necessary.
6. If all circuits/connections test normal, replace the appropriate B52 HO2S.
Repair Instructions
