Clutch Disc: Service and Repair




Clutch Assembly Replacement (LS3/LS7)

Special Tools
* DT-49267 - Dual Clutch Alignment Tool
* J-42386-A - Flywheel Holding Tool

For equivalent regional tools, refer to Special Tools (Tools and Equipment).

Removal Procedure

Warning: Refer to Battery Disconnect Warning (Service Precautions).

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Service and Repair).
3. Remove the driveline support assembly with the transaxle. Refer to Drivetrain and Front Suspension Frame Removal and Installation (without Z06) (Drivetrain and Front Suspension Frame Removal and Installation)Drivetrain and Front Suspension Frame Removal and Installation (with Z06 or ZR1) (Drivetrain and Front Suspension Frame Removal and Installation).




4. Remove the bell housing bolts. The upper bolts can be accessed by lowering the engine cradle approximately 25 mm (1 in) and tipping the engine back.
5. If reusing the pressure plate assembly, place an alignment mark on the pressure plate and flywheel for proper alignment during installation.




6. Loosen the visible clutch pressure plate bolts.
7. Rotate the engine flywheel.
8. Repeat steps 6 and 7 until all the bolts have been loosened.
9. Remove the visible clutch pressure plate bolts.
10. Rotate the engine flywheel.
11. Repeat steps 9 and 10 until all the bolts have been removed.
12. Remove the clutch pressure plate bolts from the flywheel.
13. Remove the clutch pressure plate and the clutch driven plate.

Installation Procedure




1. Inspect the clutch pressure plate and the clutch driven plate for wear or damage. Repair or replace as necessary.
2. Inspect the engine flywheel. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement (Except LS9 and LSA) (Service and Repair)Engine Flywheel Replacement (LS9 and LSA) (Service and Repair).




3. Using the DT-49267 - tool , align the two clutch driven plates.

Note: Use NEW clutch pressure plate bolts in order to maintain proper torque. Apply red LOCTITE 242 to the threads to make certain the bolts do not come loose.

4. Install the clutch driven plate and clutch pressure plate to the engine flywheel with the clutch alignment tool still installed in the clutch assembly.
5. If reusing the clutch pressure plate, align the previously created mark on the flywheel with the alignment mark on the pressure plate.

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).

6. Install the NEW clutch pressure plate bolts finger tight in the bolt holes that are visible.
7. Rotate the engine flywheel.
8. Repeat steps 6 and 7 until all the bolts are installed finger tight.
9. Install J-42386-A - tool and bolts. Use one M10 1.5 X 120 mm and one M10 1.5 X 45 mm bolt for proper tool operation. Tighten the J-42386-A - tool bolts to 50 Nm (37 lb ft).




10. Tighten the clutch pressure plate bolts in the sequence shown, starting with the number one and following in numerical order.

1. Tighten all the clutch pressure plate bolts in sequence and evenly to 15 Nm (11 lb ft).
2. Tighten all the clutch pressure plate bolts in sequence and evenly to 35 Nm (26 lb ft).
3. Tighten bolts (1, 2, 3) in sequence and evenly to 55 Nm (41 lb ft).
4. Tighten bolts (4, 5, 6) in sequence and evenly to 70 Nm (52 lb ft).




11. Install the bell housing bolts and tighten to 50 Nm (37 lb ft).
12. Install the driveline support assembly and the transaxle. Refer to Drivetrain and Front Suspension Frame Removal and Installation (without Z06) (Drivetrain and Front Suspension Frame Removal and Installation)Drivetrain and Front Suspension Frame Removal and Installation (with Z06 or ZR1) (Drivetrain and Front Suspension Frame Removal and Installation).
13. Connect the negative battery cable and tighten the bolt to 15 Nm (11 lb ft).
14. Lower the vehicle.
