DTC B0098
Diagnostic Instructions
* Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle (Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle) prior to using this diagnostic procedure.
* Review Strategy Based Diagnosis (Strategy Based Diagnosis) for an overview of the diagnostic approach.

DTC Descriptor
DTC B0098
- Passenger Presence System Configuration Error
Circuit/System Description
When the ignition is turned ON, the inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) performs tests to diagnose critical malfunctions within itself. When the SDM has completed the power-up mode, the SDM will establish communication with the passenger presence system (PPS). The PPS module will respond by illuminating both of the PASSENGER AIR BAG ON/OFF indicators for 5 seconds. The SDM will then transmit a request message to the PPS module to receive the PPS verification ID. The PPS module will transmit the verification ID to the SDM, and the SDM will compare the ID received to data stored in memory. If the data stored in memory does not match the information transmitted by the PPS module, the SDM will set DTC B0098 or B0092 and illuminate the AIR BAG indicator.
Conditions for Running the DTC
Ignition voltage is between 9-16 volts.
Conditions for Setting the DTC
* The PPS module verification ID does not match the ID that is stored in the SDM.
* The SDM has loss or no communication with the PPS module.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
* The SDM will disable the passenger instrument panel air bag deployment loop.
* The SDM requests the instrument panel cluster (IPC) to illuminate the AIR BAG indicator.
* The PPS module will illuminate the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator.
Conditions for Clearing the DTC
* The condition responsible for setting the DTC no longer exists and the scan tool Clear DTCs function is used.
* A history DTC will clear once 100 malfunction-free ignition cycles have occurred.
Diagnostic Aids
DTC B0098 and/or DTC 064 is an indication that the SDM has received an incorrect PPS verification ID. The SDM will continue to request the verification ID from the PPS module for 5 seconds. If the SDM does not receive the correct verification ID from the PPS module within 5 seconds, the SDM will set DTC B0098. If either the SDM or PPS module were replaced, verify that the correct part numbers were used for the vehicle application.

Circuit/System Testing
Important: When removing connectors inspect for damage or corrosion. Damage or corrosion in the following requires repair or replacement of the affected component/connector.
* PPS module
* SDM module
* PPS wiring harness connector
* SDM wiring harness connector
1. Check to see if the PPS module was replaced. Verify the correct PPS module was installed.
• If the wrong PPS module was installed, replace with the correct PPS module.
2. Check to see if the SDM was replaced. Verify the correct SDM was installed.
• If the wrong SDM was installed, replace with the correct SDM.
3. Check to see if DTC B1001 is set. Verify DTC B1001 is not set.
• If DTC B1001 is current, refer to DTC B1001 (Supplemental Inflatable Restraints).
4. Replace the PPS module. Ignition ON, use the scan tool to clear the DTCs then recheck for DTC B0098. Verify DTC B0098 does not set.
• If DTC B0098 resets then replace the SDM.
Repair Instructions
Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification (Verification Tests) after completing the diagnostic procedure.
