Steering Wheel Position Sensor Replacement
Steering Wheel Position Sensor Replacement
Special Tools
J-42640 - Steering Column Anti-rotation Pin
For equivalent regional tools, refer to Special Tools (Tools and Equipment).
Removal Procedure
1. Remove the left instrument panel insulator panel. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement (Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement).
2. Turn the steering wheel far enough to the left in order to access the upper coupling bolt.
3. Remove the upper coupling bolt.
4. Turn the steering wheel to the straight ahead position. Ensure the front wheels are in the straight ahead position.
Caution: With wheels of the vehicle facing straight ahead, secure the steering wheel utilizing steering column anti-rotation pin, steering column lock, or a strap to prevent rotation. Locking of the steering column will prevent damage and a possible malfunction of the SIR system. The steering wheel must be secured in position before disconnecting the following components:
* The steering column
* The intermediate shaft(s)
* The steering gear
After disconnecting these components, do not rotate the steering wheel or move the front tires and wheels. Failure to follow this procedure may cause the SIR coil assembly to become un-centered and cause possible damage to the SIR coil. If you think the SIR coil has became un-centered, refer to your specific SIR coil's centering procedure to re-center SIR Coil.
5. Insert the J-42640 - Pin into the steering column access hole in order to lock the steering column.
6. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from the steering column shaft.
7. Remove the steering shaft seal (5).
8. Remove the sensor retainer (4).
9. Identify the type of steering wheel position sensor. Refer to Steering Wheel Position Sensor Centering (Steering Wheel Position Sensor Centering).
10. Remove the steering wheel position sensor (3).
11. Remove the lower spring retainer (2).
12. Remove the adapter and bearing assembly (1).
Installation Procedure
1. Install the adapter and bearing assembly (1) to the steering column shaft.
2. Install the lower spring retainer (2) to the adapter and bearing assembly (1).
3. Center and install the steering wheel position sensor (3) to the steering column shaft. Refer to Steering Wheel Position Sensor Centering (Steering Wheel Position Sensor Centering).
4. Install the sensor retainer (4) and seal (5) to the steering column shaft.
5. Connect the intermediate shaft to the steering column shaft.
6. Remove the J-42640 - Pin from the steering column in order to unlock the steering column.
7. Turn the steering wheel far enough to the left in order to gain access to the upper coupling bolt hole.
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).
8. Install the upper coupling bolt into the upper coupling and tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb ft).
9. Install the left instrument panel insulator panel. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement (Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement).
