Circuit/System Description

The camshaft position sensor - intake and camshaft position sensor - exhaust circuits consist of a 5 V reference circuit, a low reference circuit and the signal circuit. The engine control module (ECM) supplies the 5 V reference circuit and low reference, and uses the signal as an input. The camshaft position sensor - intake and camshaft position sensor - exhaust sensor is an internal magnetically biased sensing device. A tooth reluctor wheel is attached to the camshaft. When a reluctor wheel tooth passes the camshaft position sensor - intake and camshaft position sensor - exhaust sensor, the resulting change in the magnetic field is used by the camshaft position sensor - intake and camshaft position sensor - exhaust sensor electronics to produce a digital output pulse. The camshaft position sensor - intake and camshaft position sensor - exhaust sensor returns a digital ON/OFF DC voltage pulse of varying frequency, with varying output pulse widths per camshaft revolution that represent an image of the camshaft reluctor wheel. The frequency of the camshaft position sensor - intake and camshaft position sensor - exhaust sensor output depends on the velocity of the camshaft. The engine control module decodes the narrow and wide tooth pattern to identify the camshaft position. This information is used to determine the optimal ignition and injection timing. The engine control module also uses the camshaft position sensor signal to determine the camshaft relative position to the crankshaft to control camshaft phasing and for limp home operation.

Conditions for Running the DTC

* The engine is cranking or running.
* The DTC runs continuously.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

* The engine control module detects too few camshaft pulses.
* The camshaft signal is not recognized.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

* DTCs P0340 00, P0341 00, P0365 00 and P0366 00 are Type B DTCs.
* Limp home mode activated.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

* DTCs P0340 00, P0341 00, P0365 00 and P0366 00 are Type B DTCs.
* With a DTC set, the engine may crank for an extended period of time at start-up.

Diagnostic Aids

The following conditions can also set the DTC:

* Physical damage to the camshaft sensor or the reluctor wheel
* Worn or loose camshaft sensor or reluctor wheel
* Improper installation of the camshaft position sensor - intake and camshaft position sensor - exhaust or the reluctor wheel
* Foreign material between the camshaft position sensor - intake and camshaft position sensor - exhaust and the reluctor wheel
* Gap between the camshaft position sensor - intake and camshaft position sensor - exhaust and the reluctor wheel is out of range

Circuit/System Verification

1. Ignition OFF, inspect the engine wiring harness carrying the B23F Camshaft Position Sensor - Intake and B23E Camshaft Position Sensor - Exhaust sensor circuits for the following conditions:

* Close routing of aftermarket electrical equipment
* Close to solenoids, motors, and relays
* If any of these are determined to be a possible source of electrical interference, correct any wiring harness routing or component placement conditions.

2. Operate the vehicle within the conditions for running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the freeze frame/failure records data.

Circuit/System Testing

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the B23E Camshaft Position Sensor - Exhaust or B23F Camshaft Position Sensor - Intake.
2. Test for less than 5 ohm between the low reference circuit terminal 2 and ground.

If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.

3. Ignition ON, test for 4.8-5.2 V between the 5 V reference circuit terminal 1 and ground.

If less than the specified range, test the 5 V reference circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.
If greater than the specified range, test the 5 V reference circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.

4. Ignition ON, test for 4.8-5.2 V between the signal circuit terminal 3 and ground.

If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.
If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.

5. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the B23E Camshaft Position Sensor - Exhaust or B23F Camshaft Position Sensor - Intake.

Component Testing

Static Test
1. Inspect the B23E Camshaft Position Sensor - Exhaust or B23F Camshaft Position Sensor - Intake. for looseness, damage and correct installation.

If the B23E Camshaft Position Sensor - Exhaust or B23F Camshaft Position Sensor - Intake is loose, incorrectly installed or damaged, repair or replace the B23E Camshaft Position Sensor - Exhaust or B23F Camshaft Position Sensor - Intake.

2. Connect the connector to the B23E Camshaft Position Sensor - Exhaust or B23F Camshaft Position Sensor - Intake.

Repair Instructions
