Diagnostic Fault Information
Circuit/System Description
The steering angle sensor supplies 2 analog inputs, position signal A and position signal B, to the electronic brake control module (EBCM). The 2 input signals are approximately 90 degrees out of phase. By interpreting the relationship between the 2 inputs, the EBCM can determine the position of the steering wheel and the direction of the steering wheel rotation.
Conditions for Running the DTC
C0710 5A, and 17
* The ignition is ON.
* Ignition voltage is greater than 8 volts.
* The steering wheel position sensor has been powered ON for 0.2 seconds.
* The steering wheel position sensor is centered.
* The steering rate of position signal A is less than 80 degrees per second.
C0710 5A
Fault is set when the calculated steering angle from the sensor does not correlate with the steering angle calculated from the yaw rate.
C0710 4B
* The ignition is ON.
* Ignition voltage is greater than 8 volts.
* The steering wheel position sensor has been powered ON for 0.2 seconds.
* The steering wheel position sensor is centered.
* Steering Wheel Position Sensor not calibrated after installation.
Conditions for Setting the DTC
C0710 4B, 5A, and 17
Both position signal A and position signal B are greater than 4.9 volts or less than 0.2 volts for 1.6 seconds.
C0710 4B, 5A, and 17
The steering bias is greater than 40 degrees.
C0710 4B, 5A, and 17
The difference in the phase angle between position signal A and position signal B is greater than 106 degrees or less than 84 degrees continuously for 0.25 seconds.
C0710 4B, 5A, and 17
The changes in position signal A or position signal B is greater than 36 degrees between consecutive scans of the signal.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
* The EBCM disables the vehicle stability enhancement system (VSES) for the duration of the ignition cycle.
* The vehicle dynamic caution (VDC) indicator illuminates.
* The driver information center (DIC) displays the SERVICE TRACTION message.
* The ABS remains functional.
Conditions for Clearing the DTC
* The condition for the DTC is no longer present.
* The electronic brake control module (EBCM) clears the history DTC when a current DTC is not detected in 100 consecutive drive cycles.
Diagnostic Aids
* Inspect the vehicle for proper alignment. The car should not pull in either direction while driving straight on a level surface.
* The Snapshot function on the scan tool can help find an intermittent DTC.
* Possible causes for this DTC are the following conditions:
- One of the steering wheel position sensor inputs are open, shorted to ground, or shorted to battery.
- Internal steering angle sensor malfunction.
- Noise on the steering wheel position signal circuits.
- Yaw and lateral acceleration sensor malfunction causing drifting signal outputs.
- Internal EBCM malfunction.

Circuit System/Verification
1. With the scan tool perform the Steering Angle Sensor Centering.
2. Verify the DTC does not reset.
Circuit/System Testing
1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the steering angle sensor.
2. Ignition OFF, scan tool disconnected, all vehicle systems OFF, this may take up to 2 minutes, test for less than 10 ohm between the low reference circuit terminal 1 and ground.
• If greater than the specified range, test for an open/high resistance in the low reference circuit. If the circuit tests normal, replace the EBCM.
3. Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the B+ circuit terminal 2 and ground.
• If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the B+ circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the EBCM.
4. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the EBCM.
5. Ignition ON, test for less than 1 V between the EBCM Bus- communication terminal 33 and ground.
• If greater than the specified value, test the communication circuit for a short to voltage.
6. Test for less than 1 V between the EBCM Bus- communication circuit terminal 21 and ground.
• If greater than the specified value, test the communication circuit for a short to voltage.
7. Ignition OFF, test for infinite resistance between the EBCM Bus- communication circuit terminal 33 and ground.
• If not the specified value, test the communication circuit for a short to ground.
8. Test for infinite resistance between the EBCM Bus- communication circuit terminal 21 and ground.
• If not the specified value, test the communication circuit for a short to ground.
9. Test for less than 1 ohm of resistance between the EBCM communication circuit terminal 33 and Yaw Lateral Accelerometer Sensor terminal 2.
• If greater than the specified range, test the communication circuits for an open/high resistance.
10. Test for less than 1 ohm of resistance between the EBCM communication circuit terminal 21 and Yaw Lateral Accelerometer terminal 3.
• If greater than the specified range, test the communication circuits for an open/high resistance.
11. Test for infinite resistance between the EBCM communication circuit terminal 21 and terminal 33.
• If not the specified value, test the communication circuits for a short together.
12. If all circuits test normal, replace the steering wheel position sensor.
