Steering Gear Cylinder Pipe Assembly and Seals Replacement - Off Vehicle
Removal Procedure
1. Remove the steering gear. Refer to Steering Gear Replacement (Steering Gear Replacement).
Note: Protect the steering gear boots from sharp tools and from the sharp edges of surrounding components.
2. Remove the TORX(R) screw (1) from the cylinder pipe retaining plate (2) at the valve end.
3. Remove the cylinder pipe retaining plate.
4. Loosen both cylinder pipe nuts (3) on the cylinder end of the gear assembly (1).
5. Remove both cylinder pipe assemblies (2) from the steering gear assembly.
6. Remove the O-rings seals (4) from the valve end (5).
Discard the O-rings seals.
Installation Procedure
1. Inspect the cylinder pipes (1) for the following items:
* Cracks
* Dents
* Damage to the threads
2. Replace the parts as necessary.
3. Lubricate and install the NEW O-rings seals (2) onto the cylinder pipes.
Note: Install the smaller cylinder pipe (2) to the valve housing (3) before installing the pipe to the gear tube end (4).
4. Install the smaller cylinder pipe to the valve housing.
Note: Hold the smaller cylinder pipe in place. Do not torque the cylinder pipe nut (1) yet.
5. Install the cylinder pipe to the gear tube end.
Finger tighten the cylinder pipe nut on the smaller cylinder pipe.
Note: Install the larger cylinder pipe (2) to the valve housing (3) before installing the pipe to the gear tube end (4).
6. Install the larger cylinder pipe to the valve housing.
Note: Hold the larger cylinder pipe in place. Do not torque the cylinder pipe nut (1) yet.
7. Install the cylinder pipe to the gear tube end.
Finger tighten the cylinder pipe nut on the larger cylinder pipe.
8. Place the cylinder pipe retaining plate (2) over the cylinder pipe beads at the valve end.
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).
9. Install the TORX(R) screw (1) to the cylinder pipe retaining plate (2). Using an E 8 socket, tighten the screw to 12 Nm (106 lb in).
10. Tighten both cylinder pipe nuts (3) at the cylinder end to 34 Nm (25 lb ft).
11. Install the steering gear. Refer to Steering Gear Replacement (Steering Gear Replacement).
