Supercede:
The expiration date of this service update has been revised to November 30, 2012. In addition, customers who have not had this update performed on their vehicle will be sent a letter requesting them to come into the dealership for this repair. Please discard all copies of bulletin 10332B, issued March 2011.

This service update includes vehicles in dealer inventory and customer vehicles that return to the dealership for any reason. This bulletin will expire November 30, 2012.

Purpose

This bulletin provides a service procedure to reprogram the Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) on certain 2011 model year Chevrolet HHR and Malibu vehicles. The SDM in these vehicles may have an internal fault that can cause the airbag readiness light to illuminate and may or may not set DTC B1000. With this condition, the airbags will still be active and functional.

This service procedure should be completed as soon as possible on involved vehicles currently in dealer inventory and customer vehicles that return to the dealer for any type of service through November 30, 2012.

Vehicles Involved

A list of involved vehicles currently in dealer inventory is available on the "Service Update Bulletin Information" link under the "Service" tab in GM GlobalConnect (US) or attached to the GlobalConnect message (Canada) used to release this bulletin. Customer vehicles that return for service, for any reason through November 30, 2012 should be checked for vehicle eligibility.

Important
Dealers are to confirm vehicle eligibility prior to beginning repairs by using the Required Field Actions section in the Global Warranty system.

Parts Information

No parts are required for this update.

Service Procedure

Determine if the air bag readiness light stays on. The airbag readiness light should flash for a few seconds when the engine is started and then turn off.

- If the air bag readiness light flashes for a few seconds when the engine is started and then turns off, refer to SDM Programming in this bulletin. Submit a claim using the published labor operation code provided in this field action bulletin.

- If the air bag readiness light stays on, connect a scan tool and check the system for any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).

- If there are no DTCs set or DTC B1000 is set, REPLACE the SDM. Refer to SI for SDM replacement and setup instructions. Submit a claim using labor code V2412 to close this Service Update, and then submit a claim under warranty for the repair work and diagnostic time. Refer to the published labor time for this repair.

- If other DTCs are set, refer to SI for diagnostic information for each DTC set. Complete repairs if necessary. Submit a claim using labor code V2412 to close this Service Update, and then submit a claim under warranty for the repair work and diagnostic time. Refer to the published labor time for this repair.

SDM Programming

Do not attempt to order the calibration number from GM Customer Care and Aftersales. The calibration numbers required for this service procedure are programmed into control modules via a Multiple Diagnostic Interface (MDI) and TIS2WEB with the calibration update. When using a MDI for reprogramming, ensure that it is updated with the latest software version. Use TIS2WEB on or after 10/13/10 to obtain the calibration. If you cannot access the calibration, call the Techline Customer Support Center and it will be provided.

For step-by-step programming instructions, please refer to SI and the Techline Information System (TIS) terminal.

1. Verify that there is a battery charge of 12 to 15 volts. The battery must be able to maintain a charge during programming. Only use an approved Midtronics(R) PSC 550 Battery Maintainer (SPS Programming Support Tool EL-49642) or equivalent to maintain proper battery voltage during programming.

2. Reprogram the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM). Refer to SI and Service Programming System (SPS) documentation for programming instructions, if required.

1. Connect the MDI to the vehicle.

2. Select J2534 MDI and Reprogram ECU from the Select Diagnostic Tool and Programming Process screen.

3. Select SDM Sensing and Diagnostic Module from the Supported Controllers screen.

4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

3. Clear all the DTCs, if required.
