Diagnostic Fault Information

Circuit/System Description

The folding top position sensor is a two-wire hall effect sensor providing an input signal to the folding top control (FTC) module indicating whether or not the top is fully retracted into its trunk storage area (Down) and properly stowed. The folding top control module supplies a switched filtered battery voltage to one terminal. The other terminal is a current source providing a signal to the folding top control module.

When the hydraulic cylinder is fully retracted, the top is down (open) and stowed. At this point the cylinder's piston is near the sensor which affects the sensor's internal magnetic field. The sensor's output current enters into the 2-5 ma range and the sensor is considered active. As the cylinder extends and the top leaves the stowed position, the cylinder's piston moves away from the sensor changing its magnetic field back to its normal state. The sensor's output current enters into the 12-17 ma range and the sensor is considered inactive.

Conditions for Running the DTC

* Battery voltage must be between 9-16 V.

* Folding top operation.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

B370F 01

The FTC module detects a short to voltage on the folding top position sensor B+ circuit.

B370F 02

The FTC module detects a short to ground on the folding top position sensor B+ circuit.

B370F 04

The FTC module detects an open/high resistance on the folding top position sensor B+ circuit.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

The condition responsible for setting the DTC no longer exists.

Diagnostic Aids

* Scan tool must remain connected and turned on to keep K23 folding top module active during diagnostics.

* DTC B369E 06 and B370F 04 set when the harness connector at the B45 folding top position sensor is disconnected.

* A test lamp connected between terminals 1 and 2 of the B45 folding top position sensor will illuminate at low intensity.

Circuit/System Testing

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the B45 folding top position sensor.

2. Connect a test lamp between the B+ circuit terminal 1 and ground.

3. Ignition ON, trunk closed, command the power folding top to open and close with the power folding top switch. The test lamp should illuminate when the power folding top switch is activated.

If the test lamp is always ON, test the B+ circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K23 folding top control module.

If the test lamp is always OFF, test the B+ circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K23 folding top control module.

4. Ignition OFF, connect a test lamp between the B+ circuit terminal 1 and the signal circuit terminal 2.

5. Ignition ON, command the power folding top to open and close with the power folding top switch. The test lamp should illuminate when the power folding top switch is activated.

If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K23 folding top control module.

6. Ignition OFF, disconnect the X1 harness connector at the K23 folding top control module.

7. Test for infinite resistance between the signal circuit terminal 9 and ground.

If not the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to ground.

8. If all circuits test normal, replace the B45 folding top position sensor.
