Steering Wheel Position Sensor Replacement

Special Tools

J 42640 - Steering Column Anti-Rotation Pin

For equivalent regional tools, refer to Special Tools Tools and Equipment.

Removal Procedure

1. Remove the driver knee bolster panel. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Panel Replacement Service and Repair.

2. Remove the driver's side instrument panel insulator panel. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement.

3. Turn the steering wheel as necessary to access the intermediate steering shaft nut and bolt.

4. Remove the intermediate steering shaft nut and bolt.

5. Disconnect the steering wheel position sensor electrical connector.

6. Turn the steering wheel to the straight ahead position. Ensure the front wheels are in the straight ahead position.





Caution:
With wheels of the vehicle facing straight ahead, secure the steering wheel utilizing steering column anti-rotation pin, steering column lock, or a strap to prevent rotation. Locking of the steering column will prevent damage and a possible malfunction of the SIR system. The steering wheel must be secured in position before disconnecting the following components:

* The steering column

* The intermediate shaft(s)

* The steering gear

After disconnecting these components, do not rotate the steering wheel or move the front tires and wheels. Failure to follow this procedure may cause the SIR coil assembly to become un-centered and cause possible damage to the SIR coil. If you think the SIR coil has became un-centered, refer to your specific SIR coil's centering procedure to re-center SIR Coil.

7. Insert J 42640 - steering column anti-rotation pin (1) into the steering column access hole in order to lock the steering column.

8. Disconnect the intermediate steering shaft assembly from the steering column shaft.




9. If equipped, remove the steering shaft seal.

10. If equipped, remove the steering angle sensor retainer (1).

11. Identify the type of steering wheel position sensor. Refer to Steering Wheel Position Sensor Centering Removal and Replacement.

12. Remove the steering wheel position sensor (2).

Installation Procedure




1. Center and install the steering wheel position sensor (2) to the steering column shaft. Refer to Steering Wheel Position Sensor Centering Removal and Replacement.

2. Remove the steering wheel position sensor pin.

3. If equipped, install the steering angle sensor retainer (1) and seal to the steering column shaft.

4. Connect the intermediate steering shaft assembly to the steering column shaft.

5. Remove J 42640 - steering column anti-rotation pin (1) into the steering column access hole in order to unlock the steering column.

6. Turn the steering wheel as necessary to access the intermediate steering shaft bolt hole.

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution Fastener Caution.

7. Install the intermediate steering shaft bolt and nut into the intermediate steering shaft and tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb ft).

8. Connect the steering wheel position sensor electrical connector.

9. Install the driver's side instrument panel insulator panel. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement.

10. Install the driver knee bolster panel. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Panel Replacement Service and Repair.
