Steering Column Tilt Spring Replacement (Telescoping)

Removal Procedure





Warning: Refer to SIR Warning SIR Warning.


1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling Service and Repair.

2. Remove the upper and lower steering column trim covers. Refer to Steering Column Trim Cover Replacement (Manual) Steering Column Trim Cover Replacement (Manual)Steering Column Trim Cover Replacement (Telescoping) Steering Column Trim Cover Replacement (Telescoping).

3. Use the tilt lever (1) to tilt the steering column to the UP position.





Warning

The tilt spring and the spring guide are under pressure. The tilt spring and the spring guide may become a projectile. Secure the spring with locking pliers during removal. Secure the spring with locking pliers during installation. Bodily injury may result during removal and installation of the tilt spring and the spring guide. Always use caution during removal and installation of the tilt spring and the spring guide.

4. Perform the following steps to remove the steering column tilt spring (1):

1. Lift upward the steering column tilt spring (1) up with a screwdriver until a bulge occurs. The spring tension is mostly removed.

2. Secure the steering column tilt spring (1) with locking pliers.

3. Continue to lift upward until the steering column tilt spring (1) disengages from the post on the steering column support (2) and the steering column tilt head assembly (3).




5. Remove the steering column spring guide (1) from the steering column tilt spring (2).

Installation Procedure




1. Install the steering column spring guide (1) into the steering column tilt spring (2).




2. Perform the following steps to install the steering column tilt spring (1):

1. Install the steering column tilt spring (1) to the post on the steering column support assembly (2).

2. Secure the steering column tilt spring (1) with locking pliers.

3. Push the guide end of the steering column tilt spring (1) onto the post on the steering column tilt head assembly.

4. Push the steering column tilt spring (1) into position.

3. Install the upper and lower steering column trim covers. Refer to Steering Column Trim Cover Replacement (Manual) Steering Column Trim Cover Replacement (Manual)Steering Column Trim Cover Replacement (Telescoping) Steering Column Trim Cover Replacement (Telescoping).

4. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling Service and Repair.
