Thermostat: Service and Repair




Engine Coolant Thermostat Replacement (1.6L LDE, LXV, 1.8L LUW, 2H0 and LFH)

Removal Procedure

Caution: Refer to Engine Coolant Thermostat Housing Caution Service Precautions.

1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle Service and Repair.
2. Place a drain pan below the vehicle.
3. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static Fill) Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static Fill)Cooling System Draining and Filling (GE-47716 Fill) Cooling System Draining and Filling (GE-47716 Fill).




4. Loosen the radiator inlet hose clamp (2).
5. Remove the radiator inlet hose (3) from the engine coolant thermostat (1).




6. Remove the 4 engine coolant thermostat bolts (3).
7. Remove the engine coolant thermostat assembly (2).
8. Remove the engine coolant seal (1).

Installation Procedure

1. Clean the engine coolant sealing surfaces.




2. Install the engine coolant seal (1).
3. Install the engine coolant thermostat assembly (2).

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution Fastener Caution.

4. Install the 4 engine coolant thermostat bolts (3) and tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb in).




5. Install the radiator inlet hose (3) with the radiator inlet hose clamp (2) to the engine coolant thermostat (1).
6. Lower the vehicle.
7. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static Fill) Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static Fill)Cooling System Draining and Filling (GE-47716 Fill) Cooling System Draining and Filling (GE-47716 Fill).
