Battery Positive and Negative Cable Replacement

Removal Procedure

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection.

2. Remove the underhood fuse block cover.




3. Remove the protective boot on the battery positive cable.

4. Release the battery positive clamp (1) and remove the battery positive cable from the battery post.




5. Disconnect the battery current sensor (1) and the instrument panel harness connector (2), from the battery positive and negative cable harness.




6. Remove the battery negative ground terminal fastener (1) and remove the battery negative cable (2).

7. Remove the battery positive fuse block fastener (3) and remove the battery positive cable (4).




8. Remove the battery positive protective boot from the battery positive terminal at the back of the generator.

9. Remove the battery positive fastener (2) and the battery positive cable (3) from the generator.

10. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle Service and Repair.

11. Remove the radiator air lower baffle and deflector. Refer to Radiator Air Lower Baffle and Deflector Replacement Radiator Air Lower Baffle and Deflector Replacement.

Note: Do not discharge the air conditioning system.

12. Remove the air conditioning compressor and set aside. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement.




13. Disconnect the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor connector. Refer to Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor Replacement Service and Repair.

14. Remove the starter heat shield fastener (1) and the starter heat shield (2).




15. Remove the starter battery positive fastener (1) and the battery positive cable (2), from the starter.




16. Remove the engine harness ground fastener (1) and the engine harness ground terminal (2).

17. Remove the battery negative cable ground stud (3) and the battery negative cable terminal (4) from the engine block.





Note: Observe how the battery positive and negative cable was routed within the engine compartment.

18. Remove the battery positive and negative cable (1) from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure




1. Route the battery positive and negative cable (1) into the front engine compartment.





Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution Fastener Caution.

2. Install the battery negative cable ground terminal (2) to the upper tie bar and tighten the fastener (1) to 10 Nm (89 lb in).

3. Install the battery positive cable terminal (4) to the underhood fuse block stud (1) and tighten the fastener (3) to 15 Nm (11 lb ft).

4. Install the underhood fuse block cover.




5. Connect the battery positive cable clamp (1) to the battery post and reinstall the protective boot.




6. Connect the battery current sensor connector (1) and the instrument panel harness connector (2).




7. Install the battery positive terminal (3) to the back of the generator and tighten the fastener (2) to 20 Nm (15 lb ft).

8. Install the protective boot onto the generator stud.




9. Install the battery negative cable terminal (4) and the stud (3) to the engine block. Tighten the stud (3) to 50 Nm (37 lb ft).

10. Install the engine harness terminal (2) to the stud (3) and tighten the fastener (1) to 20 Nm (15 lb ft).




11. Install the battery positive terminal (2) to the starter and tighten the fastener (1) to 10 Nm (89 lb in).




12. Install the starter heat shield (2) and tighten the fastener (1) to 5 Nm (44 lb in).

13. Connect the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor.

14. Install the air conditioning compressor. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement.

15. Install the radiator air lower baffle and deflector. Refer to Radiator Air Lower Baffle and Deflector Replacement Radiator Air Lower Baffle and Deflector Replacement.

16. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection.
